You can't play favourites like that!!"
The kids were on the beach watching the whales.... "You know, the whales are so active, and they look like they are having a lot of fun. It might be fun for us to pretend we are watching the 'Whale Olympics', and we are the judges, giving them scores on their performances...." "Sounds like fun! I'll go make some score cards..." "Everyone ready? Look over there!" "Synchronized swimming!" "Side stroke!" "Synchronized breaching....." "Ooops...looks like they crashed into each other. But they did all get their heads up..." "Backstroke.." "That's my favourite whale over there. Looks like he's going to do a breach and dive combo..." "What do you mean giving that a ten?? He didn't even get up out of the water!! You can't play favourites like that!!" "Wow!! Look at this next guy!!" "Now that's a LOT better!!" "That one really deserved a ten!" "Look how high he got his tail up out of the water!" "That gets a ten from me!" "But look over there..." "His tail hit the water! So low score from me...." Anyways, it was a fun way to spend the afternoon....
We were very excited about all the whales, so decided to stay another whole day at St. Vincent. There weren't many whales during the day. Seems they are most active in the evenings. A local was handing out 'whale-watching' buttons, and Cookie got one... "How come you were the only one who got one??"
It had rained most of the day, but the further south we got, the better the weather looked. We arrived at St. Vincent under a sunny sky, in the evening....and the kids were so excited.... None of them had ever seen whales before...and the water seemed full of them.....
It had been raining on and off all day, as we arrived in the town of Ferryland, which is the site of a major archeological dig. There was also a display with some miniature boats (bigger ones) Always on the lookout for some new way to photograph my dolls, I thought one of them might just work for Rex and Bianca. So I dressed them for the weather, and brought a towel to dry off the seat. Rex picked up the one 'oar' (I guess he knew what he was doing).... ..... while Bianca sat down in the back..... The houses in the background looked sufficiently old enough, but I had to be careful there weren't any cars going by. Then I had to Photoshop out the display area floor, and replace it with 'water'....
Just outside Witless Bay, we noticed one of the ponds was full of miniature boats.... There were some other people standing there talking to an older man, who it turned out, lived across the road, and had made all kinds of miniature boats, and ships, which he had anchored in the pond allowing them to float around somewhat freely.... There were also fishing sheds and docks around the shore.... All manned with an assortment of small dolls.... David and Ringo brought out their boats in the hopes they could sail them there too... David brought his big schooner.... ..and Ringo brought his smaller boat.... But it started to rain, and neither wanted to get wet again, so left. But I wanted to take a few photos of some of the old-timey ships, in case they might prove useful in Rex and Bianca's story....
We had heard about this Campground from some passengers on the Newfoundland Ferry, and decided to check it out. There were only a few RV camp spaces, and they were high on a cliff overlooking the bay below. When the whales were in, it would be possible to watch them right from the campsite.... But the whales were not there yet, and it was pouring rain. Paige was getting wet... But Olivia had brought an umbrella.... So said there was plenty of room for Paige, so they could look around, and stay dry, together.... One thing they had noticed, was that the dandelions in Newfoundland looked a little different than the ones back home. Especially when they got wet....
Just a quick photo of the kids in St. John's harbour, set up on a big wooden crate on the dock. I had spotted it when I was looking around for something to pose the dolls on, and thought it would make a great 'dock'. But it was a bit high for me to take photos, so Jan got the wooden step from the RV, for me to stand on...
We left the harbour and drove around through downtown St. John's to get to Signal Hill, which is directly across from the fishing fleet in the harbour. On top of Signal Hill is one of Newfoundlands' most iconic landmarks - the Cabot Tower... In the harbour, we had been in the fog, but up here, high on Signal Hill, we were in bright sunshine above the fog. The entire city below was obscured.... I had thought the Cabot Tower and some of the other buildings would make a great background for Rex, but it was rather busy, and I was starting to feel a bit self conscious. But then two limousines pulled up into the parking lot, and out spilled a group of young people obviously come to take some photos of themselves before their Prom. I figured all the young ladies in their elaborate gowns were all the distraction I needed, which made me feel a bit less nervous about taking Rex out in public.... Sometimes I'd have to wait for a bit for other people to move out of the background... But I managed some photos of Rex with no people in behind.... ...and then some more with another fortification building....
Ringo was keeping at a safe distance as all the others were checking out the lobsters.... They looked rather scary to him.... David and Cookie were intrigued.... ....but then Ringo did venture around, a bit closer..... ...to get a better look at the one Olivia was holding.... Cookie picked one up too... ...and getting rather fed up with Ringo......decided to tease him.... "You are such a chicken!!" "Get that thing away from me!!" "But it's already cooked, and can't do anything to you!" "I don't care! I've decided I'm allergic to seafood....live or cooked!!"
