Miho has a new friend to keep her company. He's a special Raven, sculpted by my sister... He arrived today, on Halloween, and is no ordinary bird.... He's a 'magic' bird.... ...and can speak.... They are already good friends....
Today is Halloween, and like most years it totally snuck up on me unprepared. Jan did buy me a bunch of miniature pumpkins a month ago, but when I tried to carve one this morning I couldn't even stick a knife into one, they were so hard. So, since I'm feeling rather 'lazy', I thought I'd just share some of my favourite Halloween photos from years gone by..... Layla from 2012.... Cleaning out the pumpkins in 2013.... All the small dolls I had, dressed up in 2013.... (one KID, four BIDs, and two KW Tinies) Some new BIDs got to carve the pumpkins in 2014... In 2014 there were three KIDs, 7 BIDs, and still only two KW Tinies.... Dumping their loot.... In 2015 the new girls.... ...and new boys got to carve the pumpkins.... I didn't bother in 2016, but in 2017 the entire gang got to get dressed up.... (seven KIDs, twelve BIDs, and three KW Tinies) It was the last time ALL my small dolls got dressed up together.... In 2018 some of the kids got dressed up to carve their pumpkins.... ...but it was raining at Trick or Treat time, so everyone had to either take an umbrella or wear a plastic poncho in order to stay dry.... I skipped 2019 but last year after the number of Tiny Kaye Wiggs dolls had grown significantly, I decided they would be the ones to celebrate Halloween in 2020.. They'd decided to carve cat faces on all their pumpkins.... Then all dressed up....
Back at Old Woman Bay for the night, Baron and Naomi went to the beach to watch the sun set.... It was cold and extremely windy, so Naomi wrapped herself in a colourful, warm afghan.... Would there be a colourful sunset this evening Baron's hat kept blowing away, so he took it off, and sat down beside Naomi.... it was too cloudy on the horizon, so there was just a little red glow for a few minutes....
Michipicoten First Nation is in a remote area on the rugged shore of Lake Superior. Tucked between the rocky outcrops there are also long sandy beaches.... There's also an installation from the Group of Seven Touring Route, which is a recent new series of installations to showcase where some of Canada's most famous artists painted their iconic works. There are sturdy, permanent easels set up with copies of the paintings that were done at that spot. This is the one at Sand Beach, Michipicoten. We also saw them at Katharine Cove, Chippewa Falls, and Pancake Bay. There's a map available from Ontario Parks that shows where they all are. It was cold and extremely windy.... ...but still ever so beautiful.....
We went to explore the First Nations area of Michipicoten. Naomi and Baron hiked their way through the forest... Until they finally reached the beach....
Next morning the clouds were back.... ...and the wind had really picked up even more.... We headed north to Wawa. 'Wawa' is Ojibway for 'wild goose'.... There's a huge goose standing high on the hill overlooking the Trans Canada Highway as it turns westward below.... It's a popular tourist stop. View to the west..... ...through the naked birches.... After breakfast we headed into town, where Naomi needed to do some shopping.... One of the stores was completely painted... ...with contemporary Ojibway art....
Later that afternoon the sky finally started to clear.... ...and we decided to stop early for the day, at Old Woman Bay.... Even with the sun it still wasn't very warm, especially not with the strong wind blowing off the lake. (*Note our RV in the upper left background below. With all the campgrounds closed after Thanksgiving, the park still allows people to park for the night in any of the parking lots that service interior campgrounds. Old Woman Bay has a trail to interior campgrounds, so qualifies. So we paid a tiny fee to park overlooking the beach for two nights. It seems to be a little known policy, since we were the only ones there. We chose a spot behind some trees to help give us some shelter from the ferocious winds off the lake.) Baron and Naomi snuggled in close to watch the sunset..... The sun sank below the horizon, and the golden glow was gone.... "It's getting kind of cold now...." "Yes....Let's go in..."
Heading north through Lake Superior Provincial Park, we stopped at the Scenic Viewpoint overlooking Agawa Bay.... It's high up a mountainside along the Trans-Canada Highway.... It's a beautiful scenic spot surrounded by rocks and trees.... Highway 17 is part of the Trans-Canada Highway, and stretches the 2,180 kilometres through Ontario from the Manitoba border to Quebec.... The highway is the only east-west route through northern Ontario, and is just a single lane in each direction, with passing lanes up all the steepest grades, and the section around Lake Superior is one of the most scenic drives in the country.... Heading further north, the highway hugs the lake again, where we stopped for another short break at Katharine Cove....
