Well, it's taken me four days to go through my considerable fabric stash and decide on some colour schemes for the upcoming dark fairies. I have an old 'peasant' skirt, printed in purple, black, olive and gold, which I'm going to use as the base for three different fabric combinations.... I'm thinking of making two outfits in each colour combo, and they will be made to fit Iplehouse JIDs, and Kaye Wiggs MSDs, since that's the most popular size. I'm looking forward to start cutting everything out, but first I need to finish the messy part of the cake making, which is currently taking up most of my kitchen table. I have four cakes on the go, and am still in the process of 'icing' them with drywall compound. The dark green bottom layer of one of the cakes, will be covered with Sculpey 'fondant', so is wood covered with florist tape, since you can't bake styrofoam in the oven. I've learned that I can't add Sculpey directly onto the wooden disc, since it separates and cracks during baking, but it won't if covered by gluing on a layer of florist tape first...
Fixed a tea set. I found this set at Value Village week before last, but the spout on the tea pot was partly broken off, the lids to the sugar and tea pot were missing, and one of the cups was missing it's handle. So I looked online to see what the set should look like, printed out a colour picture, and after some Apoxy and paint, it's almost as good as new. Now to work on the cakes for the next set of doll birthdays.
And I'm also in the middle of looking through my boxes of fabrics, trying to figure out combinations for fairies. I have way too much fabric! And when I handle it, each piece reminds me of what inspired me to buy it in the first place. But chances are I'll never get to most of it. I also have way too much old clothes and saris from Value Village. Again, each item wanted to be made into something specific, and it would have been nice if those items could actually have been made immediately, instead of the stuff going into boxes for 'some day'. I'm thinking I need to seriously go through the boxes of Value Village stuff, and bag the things I don't think I'll ever get to - and just donate it back. But would I really be able to part with anything?? After all, it would be perfect for.... At the beginning of August I won the photo competition in the Virtual Conference on Resin Cafe. First prize was a doll! Kaye Wiggs was sending me a Fair Izzy, all the way from Australia. Well, she arrived this morning! I had been wondering when she would be coming, and had a nagging feeling I should check my front door, and sure enough there was a big box sitting there. Of course I had to dress her right away. She came with brown glass eyes, but I switched them to lavender. I also trimmed her very long lashes. Maybe a bit too much. It was good that I'd saved one of the peach party dresses for myself, since it was perfect for her. I liked the auburn Tibetan lambskin wig best on her. Then I braved the awful heat and humidity to take some pictures.... Izzy looks like she stepped right out of the tea party pictures from the other day.
I'm thinking the girls will need to have another tea party to welcome their new friend. I've put up several new doll dresses for sale.... For Iplehouse EIDs and SIDs... For Kaye Wiggs MSDs... *Edited - Peach Party Dresses are both GONE
The girls looked so pretty in their new party dresses, that I thought I'd invite them to an afternoon tea party in the garden. There were all kinds of lovely cakes and fruits to enjoy....
Mary wanted to see if I had any costumes Elliot and Emily could wear for Halloween, so we tried some on. Elliot tried the 'Genie' costume, which was originally made to be one of the three wisemen in a Kindergarten Nativity play. He also liked one of my cloth dragons.... Mary was hoping I'd have a fairy costume to fit Emily, whose almost 5 months, and sure enough the one I'd made for Natalya when she was 14 months, fit her perfectly. We were very surprised! Unfortunately, the wings that went with this fairy dress, were sold as part of a doll costume several years ago, and the ones I still had didn't really match - not that Emily cared. Here's Natalya in the same dress when she was one..... and the doll costume with the wings... I'm going to have to make some matching lavender wings for Emily, and maybe I should make doll costumes to go with the two wings I still have. They are quite large, and a bit heavy for a child.
I've not done anything remotely doll-related the last couple of days. This weekend was Jan's postponed birthday party, which had been bumped back a month because of my pneumonia last month. My eldest son hosted a pool party in his beautiful backyard, and many family members attended. My daughter's family came in from out of town, and she stayed at our house with the two little ones. Here's a few photos...
