It's taken me a lot longer than I anticipated, but the golden Medieval gown is almost done.... ..and here's why......it's all that beading..... First there was the two days spent on each of the four hanging sleeves, but then came the front edge of the gown itself. There were five passes all the way around. First the picot beading with the tiny size 15 glass beads. Then a row of chain stitch embroidery with gold thread. Then stitching down the gold braid alongside the chain stitch. And then finally stitching down the opposite side of the gold braid and sewing on the tiny pearls.... I still have to finish beading, and sew on, the tricot hanging sleeves onto the under dress, and make something for the doll's hair. So hopefully I'll get done this weekend.
It was late afternoon and the sun was streaming through the window into the Curiosity Shoppe, so I had to take some photos..... I especially love the lighting in this last one.....
I wasn't familiar with the storyline of Dicken's Old Curiosity Shoppe, so looked it up. Apparently the main character, Nell, was a young teen, so a lot older than my Holly. But I wasn't sticking with the real story anyways. I was interested to learn that her grandfather employed a boy that helped around the shop. Which gave me the idea to introduce an orphan boy much like 'Oliver'. I chose Milo to be a street urchin, who lived on the streets of London, and made his livelihood looking for things he could sell... Whenever he found something of value, he'd come to the shop.... "Hi Rags..." He had brought with him a little bundle tied in a dirty handkerchief.... He handed the little bundle to Holly's grandfather, who opened it....and was surprised to find several pieces of expensive jewelry. "I was hoping you would be interested in some of these..." "You have some really fine things here..." "You didn't steal them, did you son?" "No sir! I found a dog, and the woman who lost it gave me these as a reward..." "I would never steal anything, Sir.... I'm an honest person, I am..." So Holly's grandfather paid him for the jewelry. "Bye Rags, see you next time...."
Today is 'National Polar Bear Day', and I wanted to take a new photo to commemorate it. I packed up my three Kaye Wiggs Minis and the polar bear, and we went for a little drive, but it so blustery with blowing snow, that I ended up taking photos in our backyard after all..... Hope and Layla didn't mind the weather too much.... And Hope knew the cub was very friendly.... But Missy wasn't having any of it... She grudgingly agreed to pose for a few photos with the bear.... Then they all rushed inside to warm up - polar bear included.
Steve and Iris were looking in the window the Curiosity Shoppe.... Iris spotted something she'd really like to have... So Steve went in to buy it for her...
Other than her grandfather, Holly's only other companion was her cat Rags... Problem was, the shop was often overrun with rats.... ...but Rags was not much of a 'mouser'. Rags had no inclination to chase them away.... "Maybe he's scared of them. They are rather big." "..or maybe he'd rather just be friends with them..."
I have always loved Monica, and even more so in her red Medieval Queen costume. But I have never been fond of those boring Raccoon hands, so back when I ordered Baron last fall, I also ordered a pair of Iplehouse FID Fantasy hands for her. They are the ones with the long nails they originally introduced with their Vampire line. I thought they'd add an elegant touch to her regal beauty. Anyways, Iplehouse's Special Real Skin is a very good match for Monica's Sweet Mocha resin, and with some light blushing, matches perfectly. Monica had been away at Charie's spa having her hands painted, so when I picked her up earlier this week, I thought I'd do a little photo shoot of her getting her nails done.... Just ignore Rosie's boring unpainted hands. Unfortunately Iplehouse doesn't have a good resin match for her Milk Mocha. And she still needs to get a manicure herself. "So, what do you think?" "They look perfect!" "Thank you so much!"
Holly's grandfather had his workspace by the shop window where there was the best light.... ...and he'd learned to ignore all the passers by.... ...who couldn't help but look in.... ...to see what curiosity he was working on...
I decided to participate in a 'Curiosity Shoppe' challenge last week, so set one up on the dining room table. For inspiration I used the Dickens story about a girl and her grandfather who lived in a Curiosity shop. After setting up some walls, and placing some furniture, I filled the shop with all kinds of things there might have been back in Victorian times..... I chose Holly to be the 'granddaughter'....and started taking photos.... Her grandfather is working on fixing an old Knight puppet...
The first of the two Medieval gowns is finally finished. Right now Bianca is the only Slim FID I have, so she's the one who will be modelling all the new gowns..... This purple and rust one has a 'younger' feel to it, and really suits her....
