Street Urchin

2/28/2020

I wasn't familiar with the storyline of Dicken's Old Curiosity Shoppe, so looked it up. Apparently the main character, Nell, was a young teen, so a lot older than my Holly. But I wasn't sticking with the real story anyways.  I was interested to learn that her grandfather employed a boy that helped around the shop. Which gave me the idea to introduce an orphan boy much like 'Oliver'.

I chose Milo to be a street urchin, who lived on the streets of London, and made his livelihood looking for things he could sell...
Picture
Whenever he found something of value, he'd come to the shop....
"Hi Rags..."
Picture
He had brought with him a little bundle tied in a dirty handkerchief....
Picture
He handed the little bundle to Holly's grandfather, who opened it....and was surprised to find several pieces of expensive jewelry.
Picture
"I was hoping you would be interested in some of these..."
Picture
"You have some really fine things here..."
Picture
"You didn't steal them, did you son?"
Picture
"No sir!  I found a dog, and the woman who lost it gave me these as a reward..."
Picture
"I would never steal anything, Sir.... I'm an honest person, I am..."
Picture
So Holly's grandfather paid him for the jewelry.   "Bye Rags, see you next time...."

I love the addition of "Oliver." Just loving this scene so much!

I like how you have added this character. He seems like a nice young man.

Every time I look in the shop I see something else I want to "buy." I love the little doll, now I see a lamp I would like. I guess I better save my coins (or whatever the currency was then) to make my purchases (chuckle).

Thanks. I didn't want him to be a thief or, worse yet, Holly's grandfather willing to buy stollen goods, so he had to come buy the stuff honestly.

Yes, there is an awful lot of interesting stuff in that shop. I had a fun time filling it with all kinds of stuff that doesn't normally go together. Some has never even been used in photos before.

I love your new character in this story, and the way most of his clothes look too big for him, but just perfect for a poor, little urchin!
It's fun to see how Rags and the mice appear in different places around the shop.

I wanted a street urchin, but wasn't prepared to actually make anything since ehe was more or less just an afterthought. So I borrowed Maya's coat and bag, and Steve's top hat. Its as too nice and clean, but I didn't want to permanently dirty it up, so just added a ribbon and rag hatband, and made him a rather ragged scarf. Figured that should do it without too much effort.

I tried to remember to move the rats around between photo sessions, but often just forgot. There's one been sitting on top of one of the clocks this whole time too.

Maybe Oliver could be a mudlark or a picker. Mudlarks were kids that picked up stuff that washed up on the banks of the Thames and sold it to make a living. Pickers did a similar thing in the sewers.

Your Curiosity Shop is awesome. There is so much to discover.
Milo looks great in his borrowed clothes.
