This week I need to work on a baby quilt for our next granddaughter. We went to Len's Mills near Yorkdale last Saturday to look for a quilt panel. Len's Mills has the biggest fabric selection anywhere, especially in printed cottons. Row upon row, all sorted by theme. In the 'Girl's Prints' row we found some Flower Fairy panels. There were three, each one with a selection of Cecily M Barker's Flower Fairies in a particular colour scheme. One had all pink fairies, but as beautiful as it was, I thought maybe it was just a bit "too pink". I mean, not until the baby arrives will we be 100% sure she really is a girl. Pink just seemed a bit risky. There was also a panel in blues and yellow. But the one that really caught my eye was the 'Night Fairies' panel in blues and purples.
We are having the craziest 'non-winter' this year! I saw a couple of robins in my backyard a few weeks ago, but yesterday when we came home from the quilt shop, all the trees out front were filled with robins. I've never seen so many at once, ever. It was a balmy 9 Celsius, and with all the birds chirping and singing, it felt like spring. But it was the end of January! The robins were in all the trees, especially the mountain ash and all our crabapple trees, helping themselves to all the fruit. There were well over a hundred! I quickly grabbed my camera, but with it being so dark and overcast, they aren't the best pictures ever. However, you get the idea.... As I said, I went to the quilt store yesterday. I wanted to look for some other salt-dye fabric, similar to the one I used for my dragon, but in a different colour. I found some fabric that was similar - in fact, almost the same, but with touches of purple. That should work really well for a second, larger dragon. I'm not starting on him any time soon - I have to wait until the arthritis pain in my shoulders and arms settles down - but it's exciting just to have the fabric already.

Today is Jan's very last day at work! They threw a retirement party for him at work yesterday, and these are the last few leftover cupcakes. Yup, they got the wilderness and a boat right! The fish not so much. He'd rather be paddling in his kayak. Even so, it's the thought that counts.... So now he can play full-time, just like me. I wonder how it's going to go with us both being
home all day? Well, for one thing, if it's a good day and I have a photo idea, we can go out and take it. No more hoping the weather on weekend afternoons will cooperate. So today we start on a whole new adventure in life, and all I can say is, "How did we get so old so fast?" Time to see if he likes the Dragon Food.....
It's a healthy blend of assorted road-kill, including the bones - for cleaner, whiter teeth.... Today is 'Bubblewrap Appreciation Day', and everyone is getting right into it.... ...except Ringo, who doesn't seem to like all the popping noises.... "This is fun!"
"Those look delicious! Are they for me?" Elin is not too happy about the way her new friend is eyeing her kitties. I think it's time to try figure out exactly what dragons eat,
before everyone's pets start disappearing. The dragon is fully enjoying his time with all his new friends, and is quickly learning new skills.... By the way, I've put together a 'Creative Journey' page in my Tutorials section, which documents the making of the dragon. No patterns, since I used a copyrighted commercial pattern for his body, head and legs. But maybe there's something useful that can help with your own creative projects.
Eventually my dragon will be going on some outdoor adventures with my Fantasy crew,
but for now he's an 'indoor dragon'. This afternoon he attended an impromptu tea party so he could meet some of Holly's friends. He was given the honour of serving the tea.... |
