My Santa-Wizard

11/21/2016

Looks like I may have to put my plans for a Santa BJD on hold again for this Christmas. It took so long to get him painted, and then I had to finish my Dark Fairies, and now Christmas is staring me in the face, with not nearly enough time to do all the things I had wanted to do. This time of year always seems to fly by so fast!

I still have to take my fairy photos before the outfits can go up for sale.  But because it took so long, the weather has changed and it's like the dead of winter out there. Not at all what I had in mind as far as photos go. Plus it's so cold! Hopefully there will be a little break in the weather soon.

In the meantime I started on my Santa-Wizard's body suit. His body was WAY too slim for a decent Santa, so I've made him some 'fluffy' underwear, by layering quilt batting between two layers of cotton jersey. There's an elastic strip between his legs, to keep his 'fat' from slipping out of place.

The next step is his clothes, hair and beard. His beard, moustache and eyebrows will get glued right to his face, and I had thought to glue his hair right to his head as well.  But my sister reminded me that he'll be wearing a hat much of the time - both as a Santa figure, and as a Wizard - so a wig would stand up to that better. Which means making him a hard-cap removable wig.

But I have a lot of things to do in the month before Christmas, so have decided to put him aside for now and focus on the stuff with impending deadlines instead. I don't feel like doing a sub-standard job on him because I'm too pressured to finish in time for pictures for this year.  Better to just make his Wizard costume after the holidays, and take my time next year to make his different Santa outfits.  At least that's what I'm telling myself today.

Trip Albums

11/19/2016

I spent much of the past two days putting all the trip photos into albums in Favourite Photos 2016. I tried to not make the albums too big, so there are five of them, with each one linking to the next.

One Last Hill to Climb

11/18/2016

Back together with Owen and Leona, we've come to the end of our trip photos to the
US Southwest, as the gang tries to navigate up a rocky hill in Canyonlands.....

the Final Colour

11/17/2016

I'm finally finished painting all six sets of fairy wings. I am really liking this last colour combination. I had thought it would be a challenge, since they are for the dullest fairy costume colour combination - the dull green and purple - but, like has often happened in the past, the thing(s) I least looked forward to doing, turned out to be one of my favourites when they were done!
Picture
Now I'm waiting for the 3-D black veins to dry, so I can give everything two coats of matte varnish. Then comes all the photography. I already have three KW girls dressed, and waiting for their wings. The JID girls have been dressed and waiting for quite a while longer.

Now I need some cloudy days so I can take some pictures outside. Hopefully in the next few days, as the bottom is going to drop out of the temperatures on Sunday, and taking photos when it's freezing is no fun at all.

Abo Ruins

11/17/2016

One day, the group came across a large ruin at Abo, in the wilderness of Southern New Mexico

Catching Up

11/16/2016

Coco, Winston, and the puppies were left behind...
Picture
Winston was busy putting everything back in the cart...
Picture
"Okay, I'm going to go with the others. You guys stay here and help Winston.
I'll see you later when you catch up."
Picture
Winston had just a few more things left to throw into the cart.
Picture
"Okay, once I have everything in here, one of you can hop on."
Picture
"Hey!!  Wait for us!!"

Moving On

11/16/2016

With the cart fixed, and it getting late, Milo decided he and the girls would
continue on to where they would set up camp for the night.

"We are going on ahead. Once you reload the cart, you can catch up with us."
Picture
So I took the opportunity to take some single portrait shots of the three of them as they left.

Second Colour Scheme

11/14/2016

I'm making some progress on the fairy wings, but it goes very slowly. Whatever was I thinking making six fairy outfits at once?  The painting is majorly stressing the arthritis and fibro pressure points in my shoulders and arms. But I want these things done!

I've finished the two purple sets of wings, and have started on the second colour combination.
Picture
Each of the wing colour combinations is designed specifically to compliment one of the fairy costume colour schemes. Here's a little reminder of what the three costumes look like....

Winston is sitting in my work space watching me paint. When he learned that the fairies would
be getting 'dragon' wings, he insisted on supervising to make sure I was doing it correctly....

So far, so good.

A Broken Wheel

11/14/2016

It seemed like a disaster, being out in the middle of the desert, with a broken wheel.
Picture
"What are we going to do now?"
Picture
But Coco was quite optimistic.  "I think I can fix this."

"We'll need to empty out the cart."
