A Mask and Some Shoes

Well, I finished the mask for my Queen of the Night today. I had actually started it late last summer before Asa went away for her new faceup, but her costume kept getting delayed....
over and over again, so it was never finished.

I've started a Tutorial page for "Queen of the Night, a Creative Journey", where I will continue to post updates on that costume. I'll post about it here in my Blog too, but if I have a Tutorials page for it, then it will be all together in one place and easy to find at a later date.

I've decided that there are so many parts to the Queen of the Night outfit, that the page will become way too massive, so I've decided to cut out the progress on the mask and shoes and present them as separate Tutorials. I've already finished the Apoxie Mask Tutorial, and it can be accessed through the "Queen of the Night" page, or by clicking on the photo above.

Today I also struggled with the soles and heels for my Queen's shoes. It sounds so easy - roll out some Apoxie, cut out the sole and smooth it on, but Apoxie is like working with chewed bubble gum, and doesn't want to co-operate. The heels were especially difficult, so I quit when everything looked "good enough". After the Apoxie cures, I can carve and sand the soles and heels into shape. Then paint and glue them on. All I can say, is that it sure is a lot easier making permanent shoes on an art figure, than it is to make a nice pair of removable shoes!!

*The Rococo Shoes Tutorial is also already up, and I will add to it as I progress on the shoes. It's also accessible from the Queen of the Night page, and by clicking on the photo above.

The mask is gorgeous, a true venitian mask.
The shoes are also fantastic, in French we would say you have fairy fingers. I made a pair of heeled shoes for Kassia a couple of months ago but they are far to be as nice as yours ! I also spent a few hours trying to get acceptable heels and finally had to stop and decide I couldn't do it better. I was hoping you had used an easier way to made them than sculpting them. It is so discouraging for me having to spend a few hours just for a pair of heels and at the end of this effort get imperfect heels. Have you tried making heels from molds ? I did and the problem is that I couldn't get perfect molds either ! Well, at least I don't give up, I have to find a way to make all that easier and better.

The shoes are coming along nicely. I know when to quit with the Apoxy and just let it cure. I hate working with it, but once it's cured it carves and sands beautifully. So now the soles and heels are much better. I will update the Shoe Tutorial as soon as I'm done. I think I'll even include my patterns. Buying shoes would have been a lot easier - and far more time efficient - if it was only possible to get what I wanted, and right away without huge shipping prices and lengthy waiting for them to ship.

I used to make polymer clay heels for my art doll shoes, and I find polymer clay a lot easier to work with than Apoxie. But art doll shoes were permanent, and for BJDs they have to be removable, so I went with Apoxie because it's a lot more durable and stronger. I hate working with Apoxie in it's raw stage, but once it's cured you can carve and sand it, and it takes paint way better than polymer clays.

I haven't tried making any molds. I rarely every need special shoes, so it doesn't really seem worth the effort. Also, soles from a mold wouldn't conform to the bottoms of the leather shoes as well as sculpting them directly on.
