It was getting late, and time for bed..  However the bad feelings hadn't gone away. But, she knew that she should try and get some rest....
...so she went to bed... 
But sleep would not come...   ..as she lay tossing and turning...   ...alone in their big empty bed.   Back home after the party, Naomi tried to get back to working on her baby clothes...  But she had a very bad feeling...
...and try as she might...  ..she couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.  Miho felt it too, but didn't want to upset Naomi...  "How are you doing?"  "I have this awful feeling....that something is going to happen to Baron..."  Miho tried to comfort her daughter-in-law....  "He's been out on the annual Winter Patrol many times, and nothing has ever happened before.."  But in her heart she feared Naomi had good reason to be worried. With all the extra balloons, the room was suddenly full of them...    Bonnie and Jamie went to show their Mom...    Faye gave her big sister one of her's...   Paige gave her Mom one of her balloons, and they started bouncing them back and forth to each other...   It was a lot of fun!  ...with everyone bouncing the balloons around.  Bianca went over to Naomi...   "I want to thank you for coming, and bringing the donuts and all these balloons."  "I don't think the girls have ever had this much fun at their birthday parties before."   And their mothers hadn't either...
Judith and Faye had their best birthday ever.  There was suddenly a loud bang in the middle of the room...    Ringo's balloon had popped...    "My balloon broke.."    But Naomi had come prepared, and pulled lots more balloons out of her pocket.  ...and offered Ringo a new one...  "You can blow it up yourself."  "Just blow really hard into the opening."    "Wow! it's like magic!"  All the other children wanted to try blow up a balloon too....    So everyone got a chance to blow one up for themselves...  Even Lisa wanted to try...  The children were having a wonderful time...  ...giving the ladies a chance to catch up on the latest news.    Paige was the oldest of all the children and had reached that in-between age where she was starting to feel too old to hang out with the younger children, and sought out more adult company.  Meanwhile, Lisa was keeping to herself...   Nami noticed her sitting all alone....  ...and went over to talk to her...  Naomi also noticed...
...and sat down to talk to her. "I noticed you are over here all by yourself. Are you okay?"  "I don't know. I'm really missing my family. Especially all my little brothers and sisters."  "I don't understand why Mama needed to send me here.""  "I can understand that it's very difficult for you, and that you are feeling lonely, and missing everyone back home."  "The people here are very nice and welcoming," she continued, "and I expect that you'll start to feel comfortable here very soon."  "In the meantime, why don't you ask your aunt for some writing paper, so you can keep in touch with your family back home? I'm sure they'd love to hear from you. "  Bianca finally opened the box Naomi had given her earlier....  "These look interesting..."  "They are called donuts. They are very popular where I come from."  "Baron really loves them,"  "...and I thought you might like them too, so I made a batch."  Bianca and Yvette both took a donut...  ...and then Bianca put the box down on the table so everyone could help themselves.   "Look! There's a hole in the middle!"    "Well, they certainly look delicious."  "But you're supposed to eat them. Not play with them!"  The party was for Faye, who was Bianca and Yvette's little sister, and for Judith, Bianca's daughter. They shared the same birthdate, and Bianca had ordered a special cake from the castle kitchen...  The birthday girls and all their guests...  The children all headed over to the dessert table....   ...while their Mothers chatted...    When Lisa went to get something from the dessert table, David and Jamie started batting her with their balloons...  "No! Please...!"  "Please stop!!"  "Stop it you two!"  "That's no way to treat a fellow guest, especially someone new here."  "You two should know better."  Nami and Paige had seen what happened, and went to talk to Lisa, as Monica went to enlighten Grace about her son's behaviour.  "I want to apologize for my brother."  "He can be quite a pain sometimes."  "I think he likes you. Looks like they both do."  "They sure have a weird way of showing it."  "Well...you know how it is...."
"...boys just aren't very civilized at their age."  All the children had received a balloon, except for one shy girl who had been standing by herself in the background.  "This is my niece Lisa. She is staying with us right now."
"Her mother is hoping that we can find a position for her here at court."  "I'm so pleased to meet you Lisa."  "Would you like a balloon?"  "Yes. Thank you my Lady."   Naomi's heart went out to the girl...
..as she knew only too well what it was like to suddenly find herself in a strange, unfamiliar place.  Naomi arrived a bit late for the party. The deep snow had slowed her down, so she was the last to arrive...  Everyone turned to look...
 What were those big round things she was carrying?   Naomi passed her box to Bianca. "These are for the party."  Then she passed the bunch of balloons to Judith to hold, while she took off her cloak.  "What are these?"  "They are balloons. We always had them at birthday parties where I'm from. Would you like one?"  "Yes please! May I have the blue one?"   Everyone was very curious about the 'balloons'.   as Naomi continued handing them out to each of the children...   Faye asked for the beautiful turquoise one.     "Look Mom! I got an orange one!"     |
