Okay, so you want to take photos of your dolls looking like they are in a room inside, but you don't want to go to the trouble of making, nor have the room to store, doll-size vignettes or room settings. So I use the trick of 'forced perspective' to make certain places in my house work as backgrounds for my doll photos. Most often used is my kitchen. I have a peninsula counter on which I place a box, and then pose the dolls on top. The trick is to raise the doll high enough so her eyes are almost level with your's, then using a tripod (because of the low light) shoot almost straight, watching the level of things in the background. Here's the photo taken with the set-up above.... Here's another scene set up in the same spot and ready to photograph.... And the resulting photo, taken a bit from above, like an adult looking down on children working at the counter. I've also positioned the dolls on a box or small table on top of my kitchen table..... In this case the dolls are posed on an angle to the light coming in from the windows, so I'm using a white card on their dark side, but more on white cards later. Here's the photo.... My kitchen isn't the only room I've used for a background. I've used the bookcases in my family room as a 'library'. Again, the doll needed to be elevated so she was at a eye level.... I stacked two nestling tables on top of each other, and posed Elin on top, then cleared off all the shelves in the background. After all many of my dolls stand on that drop-down 'bar', and nothing would ruin the effect of 'scale' more than having other dolls in the background. Here's the result.... Another photo taken in roughly the same spot..... And here's an 'accidental' forced perspective photo. I was just changing camera angles to make the background work behind the dolls, and in this one photo it looks like the two taller girls are actually sitting on the sofa. They aren't, but because their tushies are just at the right level as they'd be if they were sitting, and the two smaller girls and the fabric are hiding their knees, it does give that impression. I think the lighting and the fact that the sofa is in focus also helps the illusion...

I've decided I will keep adding photos as examples to Photo Tips which have already been covered. I came across two more to illustrate 'tension points' and paying attention to what's in the background. This older scene taken in Labrador, where the iceberg is balancing on Nami's hat.... And this recent Easter photo where two of the girls have bouquets of flowers sticking out of the middle of their hats.. Just moving a bit up or down, or further to one side, and it would have been fine. But hey,
even when I think I'm paying attention to the background, it still sometimes happens. I'm continuing to work on a Cinderella dress for Peach for her 'Princess Party' next month. I'm trying to create a dress like the one Cinderella wears in the new live-version Disney movie. I'm using a soft blue nylon tricot, which will hang and drape much better to scale than the tulle I've seen most people use on their versions of Cinderella's ball gown. One of the challenges was fitting so much fabric into a tiny waistband. I did manage to squeeze 3 yards of the tricot onto the tiny waistband, but the iridescent underskirt is it's own separate unit with a slightly wider waistband so it hangs a bit lower at the waist and doesn't interfere with the bottom edge of the bodice. The lace-edged slip will hang even a bit lower. For the bodice I needed some tiny iridescent butterflies. But how to make them? Then I thought to use fabric flower petals. I found some five-petal flowers in pale blue in my stash, and brushed four of the petals of each flower with blue and iridescent glitter paint..... When the paint had dried, I cut off the unpainted petal, to turn the flowers into butterflies.... ...and stitched some very tiny beads on for the bodies.
This past weekend was one crazy busy weekend. My daughter and her family were coming to town for grandson Andrew's 5th birthday party on Sunday. Saturday morning almost all the grandchildren were here - not just the usual three girls - and we made surprise cupcakes for Andrew's party. Thankfully. with so many people over, most became easily distracted and wandered off after they finished the initial icing, leaving Teagan and Natalya to decorate the cupcakes with sprinkles and dinosaurs. Unfortunately I had issues with one of the icings, which just became softer and softer, but we did the best we could. Here's the girls posing with their Jurassic masterpieces.... With almost all the family here together, they decided to throw me an early surprise birthday party as well. I received lots of beautiful flowers....this mixed bouquet in my favourite colours..... ...and these very cheerful, colourful mums.... Before my daughter's family left for home Sunday, I managed a few quick photos of Elliot, with some dandelions. He is becoming more adorable every time we see him..... My family got together to surprise me with a new wide-screen TV to replace the small old one we've been using the past 30 years. So now my main room is upside down as we have to cut one of the bookcases in half (widthwise) in order to make enough room for the new TV. And what a lot of books were in that one bookcase! Six huge laundry baskets full! Now, this is also the room I do all my sewing in, so things will be disrupted for a little while as we sort everything out, and reorganize the bookcase wall. I can't wait until it's done!
They say creativity comes in cycles, so this must be an 'off' time for me right now since nothing seems to be working out as I envisioned it. I reworked Peach's jeans pattern from last fall, and it now fits better, but it's still "girl jeans" with hip area a bit too big for a boy. But for now Miles is wearing them, and I'm paying attention to how I photograph him so 'he' doesn't look like a 'she'. Lisa is standing in as model for the girlie clothes, but I'm having troubles there too. I've designed and made the bodice for Peach's 'princess' gown, but I have to change directions with the skirt in order to make it hang right. I've also made a cute top with ballet slippers embroidered on the front, and wanted a tutu to wear with it, but it looks wrong when it's worn at her waist, and the waistband isn't long enough to let her wear it lower on the hips. Which means starting over again....
A package of shoes arrived today from Affordable Designs. I ordered them just two days ago - some dark coloured frog shoes for my boys, and two pairs of Leean sneakers. Up until now my boys have had either slip-on shoes or zip-up boots, so now they are going to have to learn how to tie up shoelaces.....
I've been reworking some of my older photos for an ongoing series of 'Doll Travels' on Facebook For 'Throw Back Thursday' I have a photo way back from the beginning - of Ryung and some amazing amanita mushrooms, taken in Pacific Rim National Park, Vancouver Island, on a trip out west way back in 2010, when I had just the one BJD...... I was so happy with the photos of Ryung, and it turned out to be just the push I needed to finally create this website - after all, I had to have a place to showcase my doll photos.
The latest four albums are also up in Favourite Photos 2015; Rosy & Ryung in the Ruins, Back at the Ruins, Easter 2015, and Darth Chocolate Continued from yesterday...... Ringo had never seen such a huge chocolate egg, and he started to lift it out of the basket..... "Oh, Wow! It's not an egg! I wonder how the Easter Bunny knew I liked Star Wars??" "Wow!", exclaimed Coco, "That helmet looks big enough for you to actually wear!" "I think you are right...", and Ringo ran off to see if it would fit..... *cue the Star Wars Darth Vadar Theme and some heavy breathing* ...and Ringo, as 'Darth Chocolate', came back into the room...... Elin gasped in surprise! Everyone stared as Darth Chocolate took Coco's hand..... "Cocoa, I am your Father!" "Join me on the Dark side!" "What do you mean 'Dark side'? You look more like milk chocolate to me." ...and some mighty tasty milk chocolate it was too! "You know, there was nothing inside this guy's head, but a lot of hot air....."
Every year at Easter the stores are filled with chocolate eggs and bunnies in celebration of Spring, and renewal. But I've never understood what all the other chocolate characters had to do with Easter. That being said, when I was busy shopping for easter chocolates for my kids, there was one chocolate character that I just could not resist, so it followed me home along with all the bunnies, eggs and chicks....and I couldn't help myself as a single photo idea developed into a little story..... The scene opens with several of the children enjoying themselves at the Easter party..... Chocolate eggs and fuzzy chicks were everywhere, and the children were eagerly checking out their Easter baskets to see what they have recieved. But then Ringo came in, and he was all upset.... "I didn't get anything. I think the Easter Bunny forgot all about me." Coco felt really bad for his friend, "Are you sure you looked everywhere?" And off he went to see if the Easter Bunny hadn't hidden Ringo's basket a little too well.... Soon he came back. "Look what I found! Your basket! It's huge, and has the biggest chocolate egg I've ever seen!" *To be continued.
My Milly boy arrived this morning, along with 6 hoodies from the half price sale. I had ordered a hoodie for both a JID girl and guy, one for a BID and three for KIDs, but they switched the BID one for a KID one. Which is fine, since the only real difference is the arm and body length. I thought I'd take advantage of the sale, since it would be nice for my dolls to wear something different on their next big outdoor adventure, and I really wasn't inspired to make them myself. The other boys were excited about getting a 'big brother' - except maybe Ringo, whose wig and boots I borrowed temporarily. I tried every 'boy' wig I have on Milly, but the best one was poor Ringo's. I'm sure he'll be happier when he gets his hair back, and the new boy has his own. I really need to order some new boy wigs! Anyway, the boys wanted to try on their hoodies right away, and go outside to fly their kite..... I'm not sure yet what Milly's new name will be. I'm waiting to see how he looks after a face up and when he gets a wig of his own. I also need to make some KID boy clothes, and his first 'adventurer' outfit.
