I picked up some 'people' clothes at Value Village this week, that I've washed and mostly 'deconstructed' - cut apart so that it's just flat fabric without all the seams.

I cut apart a Levi's denim shirt to make into jeans, and two boy's shirts with tiny plaid for shirts. And a really pretty, fine purple corduroy jumper to make into two doll dresses.

I was thinking of maybe taking step-by-step photos when I make the JID shirts, and creating a pattern tutorial, as the shirts fit both my guys and the ladies as well. The girls just need a little shorter sleeve and shirt length, but otherwise it's the same pattern.

Doll shirts aren't the easiest thing to make, as they have to be made just like human-size shirts, but in miniature - with tiny collar and neck band.  And so many of the doll shirts I see out there aren't quite right, with the collar being way too high in front. So, maybe a shirt pattern would be welcome.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with these fabrics.:) I hadn't thought about shopping at Value Village for used clothing...what a great idea! I will have to keep my eye out next time I'm there.

It's an excellent source for all kinds of 'fabrics' you'd never find in a regular fabric store. If I need a stretchy stripe in some particular colour, you can bet they have a stretchy top in just the right colour. Men's and boy's shirts can have just the right scale print or plaid. And sometimes little girl's dresses are so fancy, all they need is to be cut apart, and make a brand new bodice out of the bodice fabric, and sew the skirt back on. Baby onesies with little embroidered motifs on front can make great T-shirts. Our Value Villages usually have quite some selection of Indian garments and saris too. And we always go on Senior's Day, so then the stuff is really cheap.

Those are great fabric finds! You have to have one of the best Value Villages around.

And a shirt pattern and tutorial would be very welcome :o)
