Update on Jan

3/27/2020

Things were starting to look up a bit yesterday after an in-depth discussion with his doctor.

Turns out Jan did NOT have a heart attack after all. His heart enzyme levels at first had suggested that he had, but tests have shown that he didn't. So they cancelled the angiogram. However he is still wearing a heart monitor just to be sure everything is okay.

They also determined that Jan did not have meningitis or an infection in his brain, so cancelled the lumbar puncture. But he does have pneumonia and they are treating him for that.

He definitely had a small stroke. He didn't have any of the usual symptoms, other than confusion, and there doesn't seem to be any impairment on either side of his body. They want to do an MRI to get more details on his stroke but have been waiting for the Covid19 test results, which need to come back negative before they can proceed. They say the test results take 3 to 7 days because of the huge backlog, and today will be day 5. So hopefully we will know soon.

I did talk to him on the phone with the help of a nurse, since he still doesn't know how to use it himself. He sounded a lot more alert and like himself yesterday.  In the evening I got a call from his nurse that he was asking for a TV because he was bored. We took that as a very good sign, and arranged for one right away.

My kids have been fantastic through all this.  Mikey and Tanya have come here every day to be with me. They are on top of everything going on, and communicate with the doctors, nurses, and send constant updates to their siblings, who can't be here.  They will even cook, clean and do dishes!

The doctor says Jan will need cognitive therapy after he is released from the hospital, and the best case scenario is still at least three to five days away. But all the clinics have been closed due to the pandemic. So Mikey and Tanya have insisted that they themselves will find out what needs to be done and undertake his therapy themselves here at home.

I'm so thankful for my kids, and that things seem to be getting a little better each day. I do appreciate everyone's comments and support, but am unable to respond to everyone right now. I hope you understand.

And I will keep posting my daily 'smiles'......

This is good news. Having the worst case scenarios ruled out one by one must be a huge relief. I'm glad you were finally able to speak with him, also that you have the support of your children.

Thanks! Yes it is. I just wish the Covid19 test results would hurry up and come back - negative - so the doctors can get on with treating him

Oh, I‘m so glad for you, your family and of course Jan. Try and don’t worry too much; my Granny had three strokes back in the eighties and nineties, a time with no therapy at all, and recovered every time. It may took a little more time and lots of patience than with therapy, but still, it works. She has lived to be 96 years. I’m wishing you all the very best.

Dear Martha, i'm very happy, you've got good news.
My husband had a stroke two years ago. The first two weeks were awefull, then he recovered day by day. Now he has some minor delays on his left side - always a cold feeling in his leg and foot and two fingers with delay, when he gets tired. But his mind, his personality came back within the first four weeks and we are very thankful for that.
Jan's recovery will take time but if you stay calm and positive, everthing can turn out fine. Please rein his zest for action, my husband overdid and his recovery was thrown back for month.
I'm sending you a virtual hug and my best wishes. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks for the hopeful news. It's just that the timing is so bad with this pandemic going on. They can't treat him until they do an MRI, but they can't do that until the Covid19 tests results come back, and are negative.
