the Iceberg

We originally wanted to go to Newfoundland to see icebergs, and were rather disappointed that there were so few, and none were readily accessible. Mostly just little white spots on the horizon.  Until we arrived at L'Anse au Loup in Labrador.

There's just one road up and down the coast, and on our way north we spotted the iceberg in the bay there. Even though it looked like there were two, they were attached under the water. I took some photos....at least as best as I could with my tele-photo lens...

Then when we were heading south again through all the small towns, we stopped again to take some photos. It had turned some, and we were trying to get some different views from shore....
Picture
Trying to see it from another angle, we went over to the harbour, and someone offered to take us out in his boat for a small fee.  YES!!   FOR SURE!!    LET'S GO!!     So off we went....
Picture
He sailed us around the iceberg twice, very slowly, while we stared in awe...
..and snapped photos like crazy...

It looked amazing up close....

One part had a window right through....

One section was definitely more turquoise....

That had been phenomenal!
The sun came out after we got back to shore, and I took one last photo.

Well, so much for the disappointment over the poor iceberg showing on this trip!
This certainly had made up for it!   Definitely one of the more memorable moments!

Dear Martha, so not only did the dolls have an adventure but you and Jan did also.
The iceberg looks incredibly beautiful. It has a fairy-like quality to it. I love the photo that shows the window in the iceberg. Maybe if one looks through the window, one will see fairies.

It was amazing. Whenever the sun popped out, it made the iceberg glisten like shiny 'plastic'.

It was impossible to shoot through the window from the far side without going between the two sections, and that would have been way too dangerous. Icebergs are very unpredictable, and can break apart or roll over at any time.

Hooray for capturing up close photos of the iceberg! And a big hooray for finding a boat captain willing to take you there. (I hope his fee really was small.) The window section reminds me of Gaspe's Rocher Perce--so cool to see a version of it in ice.

Well, we didn't so much find him, as he approached us when we were at the dock there. He only wanted less than half of what the tour boat operators ask per person, and that was for BOTH of us. He also took us further out to the ruins of an old whaling station, and gave us a little history lesson. So we gave him some extra.
