the Daily Eden Report

11/17/2020

I continue to put most of my time and effort into Eden's outfit, yet it still goes rather slow.  I did finish the embroidery and beading on his hooded caplet last night. This morning I made an olive green cord to tie it up, but decided I didn't like the colour, so made a golden brown one instead.

I decided to go with the tiny studs for his tunic, which of course are the most labour intensive.  I haven't even finished the chain-stitch lines on his tunic yet.....

There are a dozen sections that need rows of studs, and there will be an average of sixteen per row, so that's almost two hundred of those tiny things. They are a real pain to put in, so I can only do so many before I have to take a break.  Yesterday I managed just eighteen of them.  I hope to get those daily numbers up, because I really don't want it taking ten days to finish.

This is where I'm at today....after another eighteen studs....

Eden with his hood up.  It was quite the challenge beading the outside edge without having any of the stitching thread showing on the inside...

I don't know how far I'll get today, as I have a photo shoot that needs doing.  Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of Hope's arrival, and she's waiting for her party.

Wow, Martha! That is looking totally amazing!!! Not that I'm surprised. You always do such incredible work! How do the studs apply? Do you have to hammer them or something? As you can tell, I know very little about such things.

The studs have four tiny prongs on the back, which you have to push through the fabric. Then you have to put pressure onto the right side of the stud with finger or thumb, while turning to the inside and keeping the fabric tight, and with a small metal tool press each of the prongs down one at a time.

Other, larger studs which have a flatter surface, can be laid on a flat surface once the prongs are pushed through the fabric, but these tiny ones are round and won't stay in place that way. They move and pop back out. The only way is to hold them in place firmly with my thumb or finger, and they get mighty sore finger from doing it.

The tunic fabric is also very closely woven, so isn't the easiest to get the studs through in the first place. But as they say 'no pain, no gain'. And the way time flies these days, it'll be next week in no time - and I'll be done.

Ugh, those teensy little studs! I bought some and tried to use them but they frustrated me until I gave up!

I know. They are really challenging. I actually threaded a needle and was going to sew on beads instead, but decided to just go for the silver studs after all. I knew it would become a struggle, but you get out of it what you put into it.

I love Eden's new outfit, I don't know about it going slowly it would take me months to get that far.
I've never tried to use studs on an outfit, Do you use an awl to make the initial hole for the stud? I wonder if Jan could make you a sort of 'dent' in a piece of wood the right size to slot the stud head in while you open the prongs, it might save your poor sore finger.
