the Big Loonie

Sudbury may have the Big Nickel, but Echo Bay, along the north shore of Lake Huron, has the world's biggest 'Loonie' - our dollar coin, so named because it features a loon.

With the kids getting increasingly bored with just driving around looking at coloured trees, Steve and Iris stopped in Echo Bay so they could get out and pose for some photos...

I am sure that when the children are a bit older they will look back on these times with fond memories. The photos are so pretty.

I did not know about Loonies. I am wondering if we have a similar historic marker down here. I will have to search Google.

The 'loonie' as it's affectionately know, is our gold coloured one dollar coin, first minted in 1987, to replace our paper dollar bill.

Then in 1997, it was followed by the two dollar coin, to replace our two dollar bill. That coin is two colour, and features a polar bear, and is affectionately known at the 'toonie'.

With four children and three dogs in an RV, Steve and Iris do well keeping the children happy. There is nothing like a chance to stretch their legs and have their pictures taken with something special in the background like a huge 'loonie' to help break the monotony of "more coloured leaves" :o)
