People in several Western European countries celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th, the anniversary of his death, way back in 343 AD. In the Netherlands it's celebrated on December 5th, and in Eastern European countries on December 19th. In the Netherlands, Dutch children traditionally put out a wooden shoe filled with hay and a carrot for Saint Nicholas' horse. If they had been good all year, they could expect a small gift and some treats the next morning.
