As many of you know, I had a hysterectomy in December. When I went for my six week follow-up appointment in the middle of January, I was told that it turns out that I did indeed have cancer. The pathology report also reported that there was a 'puncture' in the uterus. My doctor explained that it likely happened during surgery, since it was far more difficult than expected to separate the uterus from other organs due to the heavy scarring from my C-sections long ago. But there was concern about the spread of the cancer cells. So my doctor sent the pathology and surgery reports to the Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences, one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country.
At my first appointment, the Oncologist was very concerned about the pathology report, which indicated that the 'puncture' was right where the cancer was. But, he decided to have the Tumour Board review my case to see what they thought about it. The Tumour Board is made up of the top cancer doctors, and they meet once a week to discuss unusual cases like mine.
When I went back this week to hear the Tumour Board's decision, I was told that they disagreed with the initial pathology report, and that the 'tear' in the uterus was not near the tumour. So I wouldn't need radiation treatment after all. That was a huge surprise, and a giant relief.
So now I have to get my head around the fact that that cancer is gone, and I can finally start to focus on my dolls again.....
