Maya in the dandelions, contemplating his true love.... Today it's back to sewing. I did get the eyelets inserted yesterday, but didn't get the sleeves as far as I would have liked. So that's my job for today - sew in the sleeves, and possibly attach the skirts and stitch in the linings. We'll see how far I get. Now that it's finally spring, there's lots to do out in the garden every day as well. Like poking out dandelions so my yard doesn't end up looking like the photo above. Ever since the government banned pesticides and herbicides for home use, everything is turning into a carpet of yellow each spring. It really does look beautiful, and very impressive - as long as it's not in my lawn. Magnolia petals need to be picked up every day, and the few tulips that bloomed need to be dead-headed. Dead branches need to be pruned. Lots to do!

We're in the same boat with the pesticides. I tried to keep up the weeding, but the yards were too big and I wasn't prepared to dedicate my life to it. I felt pretty bad about all the weeds growing in my yard until I noticed the wild bunnies and birds coming back and I realized that the weeds are food to those creatures. I started reading about it and found that some birds rely on dandelion seeds and monarch butterflies eat only milkweed seeds. Their population has dropped dramatically. I got to wondering what else we were killing with our pesticides besides weeds? Maybe even us? Perhaps the ban is a good thing - though the biggest users, farmers, are not similarly banned. But I feel a little better for my weeds and found an environmentally friendly way to justify my laziness!!!!

It does feel like one has to dedicate their lives to it - or at least a chunk of each day. It really is ironic that the little guys are banned from using chemicals, but it's okay on the industrial level - like for golf clubs. My front yard is battling against the dandelions, whereas my backyard is being taken over by creeping Charlie. And both lawns are getting more and more violets and clover. My gardens are full of invasive plants like yellow loosestrife, fireweed, purple bells, violets, and goutweed. The only thing I really don't want in my garden is that invasive dog-strangling vine. Colour comes from New Guinea impatiens in decorative pots placed among the greenery.
