Santa at the Mall

This series of photos taken in 2017 is another very sentimental one for me.

It was the end of November, and my annual biopsy had come back 'inconclusive'. I agreed to major surgery, and even though considered 'priority' it would likely not take place until March.  Then a few days later I got a phone call. There had been a cancellation on December 22nd, and was I interested?  My first thought was 'there goes Christmas again', but I agreed to it.  Then the next day the doctor's office called again. Another date had opened up - next week Friday, December 8th.

I had just finished making the Santa costume for my Wizard, and had had plans to take holiday photos with him. I was terrified of the surgery, but needed something to distract myself, so decided to do something 'simple', and set up a 'Santa at the Mall' scene on the dining room table....

I chose two dolls to be Santa's elf helpers; Lisa to take photos, and Elin to hand out candy canes.

I decided every one of the small dolls I had at that time would get to visit with Santa in the days leading up my surgery. And they would all get a professional photo taken with Santa.  Some of the kids were brought by their parents....

Other's came with older siblings or babysitters....

Santa always knew just what to say to each of the children....

Each day that week I'd take photos of a new set of children, until finally, the last day before my surgery it was Ringo's turn. His visit with Santa still chokes me up a little.

...because I was just as scared as he was.....

The next day, the surgery, although unexpectedly complicated, was a success, and I spent the rest of December recovering. There were no more Holiday photos taken that December.

Thanks for sharing this story and your story. I am glad that all went well and that you have many more BIDs and many more stories to tell.

Thank you. I just wanted to share what this story meant to me at the time. The surgery was complicated, and ended up taking twice as long as expected. Then a few months later, I had to go for a second opinion at the big Cancer Centre. It was a very scary time.

You are one of the most inspiring people I have ever encountered, and I wish you good health and much happiness in all the days to come.

Thank you. Unfortunately "good health" isn't going to happen. I have way too many chronic conditions. I just have to make the best of what I can under the circumstances. Thankfully I have my dolls to distract me.
