Saint Francis Cathedral

The next day was spent in Santa Fe. We love Santa Fe. It's so different than other major cities. There are no high-rises or office towers. Buildings can only be five storeys tall and must be in the historic adobe design. There's a great little parking lot right downtown in the Historic district, across from La Fonda Hotel, and a mere block away from Saint Francis Cathedral. The lot has spaces for RVs, and it's the perfect 'home base' for a day exploring Historic downtown Santa Fe.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
The Cathedral was built between 1869 and 1886, and designed in the French Romanesque Revival style. It was built on the site of a church that was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and replaced a later adobe church called La Parroquia. Portions of La Parroquia remain in the form of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, which houses a wooden statue of the Virgin known as Our Lady of Peace. The statue was first brought to Santa Fe in 1625 and was returned to the city by the armies of Don Diego de Vargas during the re-conquest of 1692.   In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI officially elevated the church to 'the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi'.   Even though its design contrasts with the surrounding adobe buildings, the church remains one of Santa Fe's most famous landmarks.

On the north side there's a lovely park shaded by age old trees.....

*Note - I've stopped updating the trip album in Favourite Photos 2014, until I know how
many photos in total there will be. I had originally thought two albums would suffice, but
it's looking more and more like it may take three or four. So, the album is on hold for now.

I love your photos, especially with the dolls. They look so real.

I echo post but these photos do all look so real. All children love to hold onto the railings, I really do like that photo.
And then the last one *gasp*
Did you have an audience? And were you flat out on the floor?! That was so brave of you to take that one!

No, I never lay down in public. If you look very, very closely, you can see the 'ground' where they are standing is a slightly different colour. That's because the dolls are actually standing on the edge of the concrete seating around the statue in the park (see third photo) It blends right in with the sidewalk behind them.

I will echo Jane, your photos make the dolls look so real. The girls shopping is very cute. Bonnie actually looks a wee bit tired. She's probably anxious to get home to paint!
