Rethinking 'Just Patterns'

6/1/2020

Last week I spent a lot of time tracing and scanning in the patterns for all the Medieval/Renaissance outfits that I've made since last fall.  I was going to put them into 'Just Patterns', with just the downloadable pattern pdf, but think they are too complicated for only being given the pattern pdf, with nothing else, even for advanced sewers. They could certainly use some more information, like any under construction photos taken while I made the outfits, not to mention more detailed photos of the finished outfits themselves.

I first had the thought of making the individual 'thumbnails' open onto a page with the usual pattern pdf, but also including any under construction photos I took during the process of making the outfits. I was going to add photos of the various views of the outfits as well. Then it dawned on me that I already have Gallery pages for every outfit I've ever made, and those include detailed photos, so instead of creating a whole new page for each and every 'Just Pattern', why not add the pattern pdf to the Gallery page for that outfit, and add any under construction photos there as well.

So I'm going to rework the Tutorials page, and open up the 'Just Patterns' section, so all the thumbnails are presented in a new section on the main page, and each one will link to the Gallery page for that outfit, where people will be able to find the pattern pdf, as well as any under construction photos, and maybe even some basic tips to help with the construction. How does that sound?

Which means I need to get busy making the Gallery pages for all the outfits I've just drawn up and created the pattern pdfs for. They include the following....

In the meantime, as I work on updating that Tutorials Section, the old 'Just Patterns' file will stay where it is until I'm finished updating everything in it.  Which will take some time.

*And just to clarify, this does not mean that every outfit in the various Gallery sections will have a pattern pdf added.  Only the outfits shown in thumbnails in the 'Just Patterns' section on the main Tutorials page.

That is very generous of you to create a repository of information on how to make the costumes. I am sure that folks who sew will love learning how to create your lovely outfits.

Unfortunately 'Just Patterns' won't have detailed instructions like the illustrated pattern tutorials I used to do. This newer section is mostly for advanced sewers who can figure out stuff on their own, possibly helped by whatever photos I may have taken during the construction process. It definitely won't be step by step.

You are very welcome. I'm glad they help inspire you. That's what I was hoping they might do when I put them together.

It is very generous of you to share not only the patterns but also all the time it takes to redesign the pattern sections in such a thoughtful way.

I'll probably never have enough time to make all the wonderful costumes you share, but makes a pleasant goal to dream about.

Thanks again for all you do!

Thanks. It does take a lot fo time, and with it being gardening season right now, I've not done a thing on the patterns yet. Hopefully soon.

It would be if I could just figure out how to go about doing it, without making everything even more complicated. The idea sounds so simple, but it isn't. Oh well, it gives me something to do.

I don’t know how you fit in all that you do! Thank you so much for doing this.

To be honest I hate to see all my years of pattern work end up in recycling after I'm gone, so I want to put them out there for other people to use.
