Piles of Petticoats

3/14/2015

Well, I'm finally finished the four sets of petticoats and pantaloons for my new Renaissance costumes. Yes, I know women didn't wear either back then, but the pantaloons are to protect the dolls from their stands. And the petticoats are instead of a chemise which would only add extra bulk to the outfit, plus they help hold out the skirt. Both are edged with lace, which would be another 'no-no' as lace was not widely used in clothes back then, and it definitely would not have been 'wasted' on underwear. So much for me being a 'detail-oriented' person.. I'm perfectly willing to throw historical accuracy out the window, as long as the final product 'looks period' and the doll looks good in the finished outfit. I guess the term for my costumes would be 'Fantasy' Medieval or Renaissance.  Anyway, here's Ryung sitting in the middle of all the petticoats.....

Definitely nothing 'period' looking about her yet, except maybe for the square neckline. The dresses are coming along, albeit rather slower than I would like (what else is new?) I'm currently working on the four under-dresses, little of which will show under the final gown - just the beaded neckline, and the front of the skirt. The over-dress bodices and skirts are cut, but I can't go any further with those until the sleeves are made, and those are the most elaborate part of the costume.

Here's the four colour combinations; rust & black over pale gold, green over a red/gold taffeta, wine red and black over gold satin, and magenta velour over a pale metallic brocade....

I love that the costumes are 'fantasy' Medieval or Renaissance.....that makes for really pretty dresses!
And well done on all the sewing of the undergarments....what a sea of pretty white cotton and lace!

I love to see your WIP shots for your sewing projects ((^_^))

Well, when I'm sewing doll costumes, I don't have as much time for doll photos, so 'under-construction' photos are all I have to post.

I'm with you - I much prefer the smaller seams and smaller lengths of fabric in doll clothes. Human size-seams are just endless!

Maybe it's not historical but it's beautiful. And funny - poor Ryung reminds me this period caricature: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sit_in_crinoline1858.jpg

Exactly! Fashion should be funny, not dogmatic.

I think they call that artistic licence Martha, I love frilly petticoats and the lace is the icing on the cake. The fabrics are so lovely, it's not often we see dolls clothes made of brocade, satin or silk. I will look forward to seeing the progress.
