Owen's Boots

2/18/2015

With my last commission done, I'm taking the time to finally finish Owen's costume. I always start close to the skin and work outwards. Which means a pair of beige tights to protect his legs from the black pants.  Then the boots.  I purchased them quite awhile ago, and they looked very nice on the Internet, but I was very surprised when they showed up with bright white zippers up the back. Like, what was the manufacturer thinking?  Brown boots should have brown zippers!

So this morning I decided to paint out the white top-stitching with some diluted, slightly darker paint, and let some of the paint seep into the fabric of the zipper to kill that whiteness.
Picture
The untouched boot is on the right, and the painted one is on the left. I also added a bit of 'dirt' and 'wear', since I don't want the boots to look brand new.  Here's the back view....

The zipper doesn't stand out nearly so much now. I'm planning on making separate fold-down
cuffs on the tops of the boots, and those will hide the white zipper heads.

Well done! I HATE it when manufacturer's spring surprises on us like that.
Yes it has happened to me too.
I agree....brown boots should have brown zips!!!

I love that you have done something about it......instead of just whinging and moaning and tossing the boots in the 'forgotten box' as I did!
*shame on me*

You inspire me Martha to action.......thank you!

You will make Owen's boots perfect! ((^_^))

Well, decent-looking boots at a good price are hard enough to find, so better just try fix them.

Good job with these boots! Few years ago, I ordered a green skirt for myself and it came with a purple zipper. At least both colors were dark. :-)

While I know almost nothing about these precious dolls and so desire to find some 2 buy, (tired of expensive dolls that do not even have sitting capability), still in my ignorance I too agree bcoz it is only common sense u dont put a 'bright' white zip in a brown shoe, but there are those who have no common sense, amazing, but true. Not sure how you painted them, if just normal, but they sure look so nice and now a quality looking boot as it should have been. Thank you Martha! You are truly a Genius in your field.

They look great! Definitely more realistic than the originals. I love seeing all the detail you put into your outfits. :)

You could always paint the zipper pull too and seal it with mod-podge if you wanted. I did that as a decoration on an outfit a few years ago and it has held up really well!

I think after I add a cuff to the top of the boot, the zipper pull won't even show.
