I'm rather self-conscious and don't really like people watching when i take my doll photos. The exception being on this trip when i took the fishing photos, and the place was overrun with a movie crew checking out the angles for their upcoming film.
But these sunset photos were a challenge. I really, really wanted to take a sunset photo. It was the very last evening, before we had to go home. Problem was, both campsites on either side of us were occupied for the upcoming weekend, and I was nervous about begin watched. Jan pushed me to do it anyways, and ignore all the other people. So we set up two scenes - the kids sitting on the picnic table, and the small campfire with chairs, to transfer some of the dolls to after the sunset photos.
But our campsite was the perfect spot to watch the sunset - which is why we always book it - and all the people from the neighbouring sites wandered over. Then they noticed the doll set ups. Some of them were enthralled and thought it was amazing. They asked if they could take pictures too. I said that was fine, but for the best shots they'd need to get down where I was to shoot the scene the same way. One older man did. He thought it was the greatest thing, and said his grandchildren would love the pictures.
After the sunset pictures, we transferred some of the dolls over to the campfire scene, and Jan lit the fire. It grew so big way too fast, and Jan had to pull the dolls back several times. At one point the flames almost hit Aaron, but thankfully he was unscathed. The flames were just getting too big, so Jan ran to get some water, which he sprinkled on the flames to keep them under control. And all the time, our neighbours were right there taking pictures too.
Anyway, lessons learned:
1. When using real flames around dolls, always have water standing by beforehand, just in case.
2. Stop worrying about what other people will think. They will either ignore you, or think it's totally cool.
And one last photo of the campfire after it was 'controlled' a bit with a few sprinkles of water....perfect embers for roasting marshmallows, but I hadn't brought any that time.
