with any patterns or colours you like... just like she does."
First we draw the head, just like before..."
Narae's children's art classes ran for six weeks, but there were so many kids who wanted to come that she had to run two separate classes per week. Both classes did the exact same things, but I only photographed one of each project - so three projects per group. On the final week, Narae introduced her students to the work of Laurel Burch "This week I want to introduce everyone to the world of Laurel Burch. She's famous for her very colourful paintings of cats." "I will take you step by step through drawing cats like hers, " "...and then you can decorate them any way you want, with any patterns or colours you like... just like she does." Paige handed everyone two sheets of paper... Then Narae did a step-by-step drawing of a cat's head with everyone.... Then she showed everyone how to draw the body of a simple seated cat.... ....as everyone followed along... "Now, everyone take your second sheet of paper, and we will draw a standing cat. First we draw the head, just like before..." Everyone followed along.... "And now we draw the simple body, like this..." "And now for the fun part.....you may decorate your cats in any way that you like. You may use one of these designs for inspiration, or you can make up your own. And then colour your cats."

Martha, I love the fact that you gave the children (and us) an art history lesson within the art lessons. I am sure we enjoyed the lessons as much as the children did!

LOL Well, it helps to give some background on what they are going to do. I always had lots of samples of the artist's work that we were going to be 'inspired' by.

I wish I had had an art teacher like Narae when I was young......I would have loved her as much as all these little Iplehouse dolls love her! LOL!

I would have liked that too, but alas, kids don't get much quality art these days. Which is why I volunteered to teach art at my kid's school when the youngest two went there. I enjoyed it as much as the kids (and teachers) so continued long after my kids graduated and moved on. My goal was to get the kids to have fun making something they'd be proud to take home - and maybe learn something in the process. All with just the few materials available in the school stock room.

Yessssssss. This was my absolute favourite thing to do in Grade 4. Our teacher was a HUGE Laurel Burch fan, so this is what she chose for our pastel unit. I think I must have made about 12 of them it was so fun.

I love when my pictures bring back fond memories for others. The series was a trip down 'memory lane' for me too, but from the teacher's viewpoint.
