New Furniture

5/10/2024

Two weeks ago I went to the Greater Toronto Area Doll Show. There's only two shows every year that are within driving distance, and it's always exciting to go and see if there's anything interesting I can use for my dolls. Some years there's nothing, but this year I hit the jackpot. I was especially thrilled to come across two pieces of MSD size furniture, and took a quick photo when I got home...
Picture
The two new pieces of furniture needed their own room setting...so I put one together...

Lawrence, who just happened to be in contemporary garb, volunteered to try out the chair...
Picture
I took a photo and thought it looked so wrong. Unlike a human, he didn't have the weight to press down on the seat cushion, so was sitting high and dry ON top of the cushion, as opposed to comfortably IN the chair.  So I was determined to do something about it.

Thankfully the seat cushion was loose, and quite well made. I unpicked the back seam, removed the foam cushion, then sliced the foam much thinner - to less than half. Then I stitched a wide tuck into the edge of the cushion cover, inserted the thinner foam back in and stitched the opening closed. I also added some tufting to help shape the cushion even more...
Picture
Then Lawrence could finally get comfortable. His elbow could rest on the armrest, and the shaping from the cushion tufting gave the impression that he had some substantial weight as he sat IN the chair.  All the work had definitely been worth the effort.

Such attention to detail. I would not have realized that was the issue. You are so right; he looks settled in conmfortably now.

Thanks. It was really bugging me. In the first photo it screamed "doll furniture", but it looks far more realistic after I altered the cushion.

I like your new room.

I had not noticed the "high" cushion before you pointed it out. I now see what you mean and I like the change you made.

I am looking forward to seeing who visits the room next.

It all looks wonderfully cozy, just the sort of soothing room to kick back in, relax, and enjoy a good book, and a cup of tea. : )

Thank you. I like it so much that I've left it sitting on my dining room table just so I can look at it now and then.

I realize most people wouldn't have even noticed, but I'm super picky when it comes to photos with my more realistic dolls.

The room will make its premier in an eventual upcoming story as a room in the 'Prince of Wales Hotel' in Niagara on the Lake.

Is that hotel the beautiful one that used used in the honeymoon story a while ago? Sorry if I am mixing things up.

No, Baron and Naomi went to Quebec City for their honeymoon, and stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac.

I hadn't noticed how high the cushion was either. The changes you made make it look comfortable and real. The whole room looks warm and inviting.

I have to make a cushion for the small couch I have, and will definitely follow your example to make it look "real". Thank you for yet another useful tip!

To be honest I hadn't really noticed that the seat cushion was too high until I saw the photo of Lawrence sitting in the chair.

It's always better to have a seat cushion too thin rather than too thick.

Fabulous finds!
And yes! I get it !!!

As soon as I saw the photo of Lawrence on the chair....I thought "oh dear"

You did an amazing job of making it into a perfect, lived in and cosy reading chair.....absolutely perfect!
Now it looks real....happy smile
