Moose

8/7/2019

Moose are a night-time danger in much of Canada, but nowhere more so than in Newfoundland. Not being native there, several were imported some hundred years ago, and lacking any natural predators, have multiplied into the tens if thousands. Being dark brown they are almost impossible to see at night, so pose a real danger on the highways. Each province has it's own unique moose warning signs, but the best ones in my opinion are the ones unique to Gros Morne National Park.....

"Look at that sign!" said Ringo....
Picture
"Those people had an accident, and the moose has come to see if they are okay."
Picture
"No, silly!  That car is crumpled up because it hit that moose."
Picture
"They are as big as a horse, and are really dangerous, because if you hit one on the highway, the moose gets killed, your car gets destroyed, and there's a good chance you will be severely injured!"
Picture
"That's awful!! I hope we don't hit any moose!"

We were disappointed that we only saw two moose this trip. Usually in spring there's way more, as the mothers drive off the yearlings before they give birth to a new calf. On one trip several years ago, we counted forty two moose in a single afternoon, all at the side of the road, and sometimes even on it.

What a cute sign. I guess it's really only cute though if the Moose stays away from ones car (smile). Is Ringo cheering for the Moose (laugh)?

It's meant to drive home the danger moose pose. I've seen what can happen to a transport truck when it hits one, and it certainly isn't cute. It's even worse for a small car. All the national parks there post how many accidents and fatalities there have been with moose that year, on huge signs along the highway.

That's a great sign! Poor Ringo, one more thing for him to worry about :o) He really needs his cheerful big brother to cheer him up.

That sign is exclusive to Gros Morne, and I've heard that they have a hard time with tourists stealing them. They must have just put up a new bunch, since there were quite a few this time.

I had wanted to take a photo of one, but the roads in Nfld are built so high, with very steep shoulders, so you can't just pull over onto the shoulder. But this one was right after a pull-off
