The lake was way too rough to go out in the canoe, so Jan just kayaked by himself, while I entertained myself taking doll photos, doing beading on the doll costumes I've been working on, and going on 'butterfly hunts' with my camera. Not that they were hard to find - they were everywhere - but they didn't stay still for very long, and the flowers they liked feeding on were constantly swaying in the wind. These are some of my favourite photos....
I'm back! It was a very hot, humid, couple of days up north. I did manage several sets of doll photos, mostly in the mornings and evenings when it wasn't too hot. But one of the most memorable aspects of this trip will be all the monarch butterflies. I've never seen so many at one time anywhere, ever. Hundreds of monarch butterflies, fluttering in the breeze, feeding off the wildflowers, and resting in the trees. It was extremely windy, and the asters and goldenrod were whipping wildly in the wind. I was surprised the butterflies managed to stay on. But many of my photos did end up out of focus.... The monarchs seemed especially to like the white asters... I even spotted several clusters resting in the trees... It was definitely a wonderful sight that I will always remember....

I just took them for granted before. There's one Monarch butterfly that comes flitting through my backyard now and then. But the numbers of butterflies up north was just awe-inspiring.
