Making a Wig Cap

2/20/2019

My David is going to get a handmade wig, which means I have to make a wig cap.  Now, while he's still unpainted. So I started today.

I really don't like making the wig caps. I came across a wig-making tutorial by Whispering Grass a while back. Her wigs looked impressive, and her technique looked simple enough, so I tried it. But it was anything but easy - mostly because tulle doesn't exactly have much 'surface area' for glue to adhere to, and I was having a terrible time getting the tulle to lay flat on the head. But I persisted, came up with some techniques of my own, and have now made several hard cap wigs based on her technique. I've managed to come up with some tricks to make it as simple as possible, and without getting my hands covered in glue.

So, I decided that I'd take photos as I made David's wig cap, and his wig, and turn them into an illustrated, step-by-step Tutorial, so others who try the tulle method won't have quite the same challenge I did at first.

Dear Martha, I am sure that you will make the instructions easy to follow. David will be a handsome guy when you finish.
I am off to a Madame Alexander Doll Club weekend. I will check in when I return on Sunday.

The instructions for making the wig cap will be easy enough to follow, but gluing on the hair is another thing entirely, and it's not something that's easy to explain. But I'll do my best.

Have fun!

I'm really looking forward to this tutorial - I have tried so many methods, and still struggle to get wigs that look the way I want them to. They always seem to end up too full and top heavy, or with cap and glue showing...

I'll do my best, but gluing on the hair is the most difficult part to explain, since it involves a lot of 'artistic judgement'. But I will try.

I echo the other comments, looking forward to your tutorial and 101 ways to avoid a glue mess.

Avoiding a glue mess while making the cap is easy enough, but adding the hair is another story entirely. I use hot glue to attach the strips of mohair, and there's just ONE chance to get it right. It always makes me super nervous.

Maybe you should wait until the Tutorial is up, and see if it's actually good enough to help you make a wig like you envision.
