Making a Cake for Byuri

1/6/2015

One of my goals for 2015 is to acknowledge all the younger kid's birthdays - the day they arrived - and do something special for them. With 12 Iplehouse children here now, that means a lot of birthdays, although they are nicely spread out throughout the year.  And then there's the Kaye Wiggs girls as well. And the mice, and the frog..... Okay, this could be a bigger project than I thought.......

The first little girl to celebrate a birthday this year is Byuri, who arrived on this date in 2012. I was going to make her a cake, but I wasn't feeling very well yesterday and with no time left to spare, Elin, Erzulie and Ringo decided they could make one today.

One of these days someone will get a real edible cake, but because we were running out of time this cake is made of styrofoam with crack-filler 'icing'. I thinned some of the drywall compound with water and tinted it with a bit of pink paint. It looked and behaved so much like real icing that I had to keep reminding myself I couldn't lick it off when I got some on my hands.  Thankfully with it being winter and the furnace being on, the 'cake' is proceeding quite quickly since it can dry on a heat register each step along the way.

Well, better put it back on the heat register so it can dry, and the kids can finish it......

What a great idea! The cake looks great and your kids seems to have a lot of fun with the icing.

Thanks! I figure I might as well take advantage of the cake being under construction and take a photo. I was so tempted to smear some on Ringo's nose and cheeks, but I don't know how that would react with his sealer, so didn't.

First, let me say, I love coming 2 your website, and it is one of my hightlights of my day. So when I do not see your post, I have immediately gone into praying 4 your health as this is the time of year that we need 2 love ourselves a bit extra. We Need you! and love you. so get well. Wish I had some dry wall compound, I dont, so I will have to make mine from some other source, like baking soda and lotion, pinterest has some very simple and interesting 'doughs.' I still wish I could afford to buy one of these lovely children, and I have no clue whatsoever about faceup nor how to find someone I could use that I would know. Always so much to learn. But I desire to learn. Your inspire the rest of us and I am most grateful. Pls feel better soon! Take cinnamon with equal parts honey, I do not go 2 doctor since I do not work and sales are so tiny even after 5 years, so I heal myself. And if you cannot breathe, eat a TBLspoon yellow mustard, it helps with breathing. God Bless You Martha. Katee

Thank you! That's so sweet of you. However, just because there's no post one day doesn't mean I'm ill. Some days I am, and other days I'm so tired I have to force myself to do anything, so those days a doll photo is out of the question. Other days I'm so busy sewing that there's no time for doll photos. They do take a lot of time and effort to set up - and then I have to clean everything up again afterwards.

I know everyone likes to see photos, and I like them too, but I really, really, need to get some sewing done this year. I've been working on clothes for the two new little ones, and even though I'm very tempted to show them - Nami looks beautiful in Bono's green lace dress at the moment - I really want to save them for when the little ones get home, and they get to show them off themselves.

How sweet of Elin, Erzulie and Ringo to help out with Byuri's birthday cake!
And it really does look good enough to eat!

And I would say you have taken on a HUGE project of birthday celebrations for the year.......but it won't half be FUN!!!

I'm hoping it won't be too much work throwing birthday parties for all the kids. Their arrival dates are pretty spread out throughout the year, except there's five in December, and three of those are on the same date. I'm also counting on some of them wanting to order the same cakes from the bakery as their friends had.
