Leaving Newfoundland

8/22/2019

It was finally time to leave Newfoundland. The ferry would sail at 11:45, and we had to be there two hours beforehand, so there was just enough time for a quick visit out to Cape Ray....

Then it was time to board the ferry. This time we were sailing on the 'Blue Puttees', which has much better outside passenger decks, so the kids came along....

*Behind the Scene

I don't normally like taking doll photos in public, and had been lucky most of the trip to have been in very isolated places, but a ferry will never be one of them. After taking the photos above, Jan suggested I step back to show the real setting.....

Thankfully everyone just ignored us, although one women who was intrigued, did approach us to ask about the dolls and what we were doing.

Oh no, is the journey over? I am crying with Ringo.

I love seeing Jan holding the dolls.

I don't take too many photos in public with my dolls either. Whenever anyone looks at me, I just say "doll collector" and she or he kind of nods.

I hope you told the lady who approached you that you are an important doll maker and doll blogger/photographer with an international following!

Not yet. Once back on the mainland, there's still several days to go before we actually get home. One of my favourite photo locations for Rex and Bianca is still coming, as are several more adventures with the kids.

And yes, the woman looked up my website on her phone. Don't know if she ever followed up. Not many people ever comment here.

Dear Martha, I don't know why folks don't leave comments either.

I certainly appreciate the time you take to take photographs and create your stories.

The travel stories take me to places I will never visit in person and yet still get to see. The doll stories at home teach me about costumes and history.

Please know that I am grateful for all of your efforts.

I really do appreciate that you take the time to comment. So few people do. The Weebly stats show that there are over 32,000 hits on my site per week, from over 5,000 individual people. So thousands of lurkers. Yet I can count the number of comments on the fingers of one hand.

But I try to not let it bother me, because I use my website as my personal doll photo album. It's a way better way to present my stories than on Facebook.

It's easy to understand why Ringo is so sad leaving Newfoundland. The scenery is so beautiful. The kids had some great times there, even if Ringo was scared by the lobsters and the horses!

The behind-the-scenes shot on the ferry was interesting. It's surprising in a way that people mainly just ignored what you and Jan were doing. I would have been a fascinated observer!

I love your photos and how they take me to places I'll never see in person. Thanks so much for all the enjoyment!

Thanks! This trip the kids didn't get all that much attention. I'd taken dolls to Newfoundland twice before, and was having a hard time coming up with 'new' things for them to be doing.

Now, Rex and Bianca were an entirely new, different story, since I'd never taken dolls like them anywhere before.

I like including some scenery shots to give a better idea of where we actually were. I found it interesting there was still so much snow - in July. And the really interesting thing I discovered is that even though I usually think of Newfoundland as being way up north, it actually lies between the 46th and 51st parallels, which means it's on the same level as Britain, and is mostly below the 49th parallel, which is Canada's southern border with the US.

Dear Martha,
please don‘t be sad that not many leave a comment. I know many from France and Germany are following you daily but it‘s not easy to comment in a foreign language. Besides, I would repeat me permanently „Wow, it‘s so cute/ beautiful/well done“ and I fear that‘s boring with time. But I really appreciate your art and it’s always a joyful experience, so thank you very much.

Hi Clara,

No problem, I just accept it for what it is.
