Lawrence's Outfit

I've been making good progress on the two black 'leather' surcoats. Yesterday they both had their shoulder seams sewn, and the first trim sewn on....

Today I'm working on finishing Lawrence's surcoat.

I've hand-stitched the brown picot edging all the way around, and have started sewing the filagree with hook fasteners down one front edge. I also thought the gold trim needed 'something', and I had some silver studs the perfect size.

Now comes the hard part - sewing the hooks and filagree on the opposite side in exactly the right places.  And then comes the chainmail.  Unfortunately the black mail I wanted to use for Lawrence's outfit does not have the same flexibility as the stainless steel mail - he wouldn't be able to bend his elbows -  so both outfits will get the stainless steel one.  I just have to figure out how to make four sleeves and a collar fit out of the two pieces I have.

Very handsome and his tunic looks amazing. I wonder if you could just paint the stainless steel chain mail black with spray paint?

No, that would be a waste. The stainless steel chainmail is from a butcher's glove one of my sons gave me, and those things are super expensive.

I may just go with my idea of making two sets of chainmail sleeves that can be snapped into place, and see how restrictive the black one actually is.

The black mail is from a small clutch purse I found at Value Village, and isn't exactly your traditional chainmail. On the good side it looks like rows of metal sequins, but the back side is much more interesting. It does drape some, but not as well as traditional chainmail, especially not on a smaller doll.

I made a sleeve just to test the black mail, and it urns out that it's flexible enough. Yay! means he'll get black mail after all.

Those are looking amazing! I love their tunics as well. I'm very happy that your black chain mail will work after all. Now your vision can come to life just as you had hoped! I love looking at your "in progress" photos. And, of course, your amazing finished ones.

I'm really happy with how he's coming along, and am excited to work on him, even thought I keep making substitute decisions.

I'm taking more under construction photos than usual while working on these two, with the intention of doing a 'Creative Journey' post at some point.
