My all time favourite reference book for making historical costumes for my dolls is Patterns for Theatrical Costumes. If you are looking for patterns for every major historical period, then this is the book for you! It begins with a short introduction on how to use the patterns in the book. Then both a man and a woman from each historical period from 3000 BC to 1915, are shown separately, each in a full-page line drawing with all the parts of their costume clearly labeled. On the facing pages are all the patterns needed to recreate that particular costume, along with general instructions on construction. There is also a section for specialty costumes like clerical robes, Chinese, Japanese, and animal costumes, as well as special items such as hats, crowns, corsets, masks & theatrical wigs. This is one of the best books on historical costume patterns that I've ever used! Beginner sewers might not find it too helpful since there are no actual instructions, nor does the book show finishing details or how garments were closed. But for more advanced sewers who are looking to learn how clothing was cut throughout the ages, it can be invaluable.
