Helping Out

In addition to photographing scenes for Baron and Naomi's story, I have also had several other projects on the go. One of which, still ongoing, is chronicling Steve and Owen as they help out with the repaving of our section of subdivision road. The town has been repaving sections of our subdivision the past few years, and this year it's our turn.  The work was expected to go through August and September, into October. So I made a second safety vest, so both Owen and Steve could 'help out' periodicly.

I even found a map of our subdivision online so Steve and Owen could discuss what needed to be done..

The bad sections of sidewalk had already been replaced...

...and then all the curbs needed to be replaced....

Owen helped dig the trenches for the new curbs....

The guides for the curbs were in place, so extra traffic cones were needed to protect them....

The next morning the curbs were extruded....

Up until then I had been very careful to only go out to take photos in the evenings or when the workers were taking a break down the street. I'm rather self conscious taking doll photos in 'public' , and it's hard enough out somewhere where no-one knows who we are, but this was right in front of our house.  But some of the men must have seen us the day before, since that morning when Jan was out front, one of them asked to see "the little workers". So Jan took Owen out, along with a printout of some of the photos I'd taken. He said they were very impressed.

But instead of making it easier, I only felt even more self conscious - even though I would have loved to have taken more photos with my guys.....

...especially the day they chewed up the old asphalt....

Steve did go out to check on the progress....

...and to see that the equipment was parked safely out of the way that evening....

But then early yesterday morning, on the hottest day of the entire summer so far, they were out there laying the first layer of asphalt in front of our house, and I HAD to take some photos. Who cares who was watching.   So Owen went out to help direct traffic.....

By nine they were done. I guess they knew it was going to be an extremely hot day.

The roadwork is nowhere near done, so I'm sure Steve and Owen will get plenty more opportunities to help out some more. Hopefully when it's not quite so hot.

Your "little workers" take their jobs seriously. They look great!

I can imagine the human workers were impressed when they saw the photos. They probably never expected the dolls would look like life sized figures. Your use of forced perspective produces amazing real photos. I'll bet if you asked them, some would love to have their photos taken with your little workers!

Thanks. Even though the workers were interested, it doesn't help me one bit in getting over being super self-conscious.

Cute idea! I'm self conscious of taking doll pics too, but the one time I did take some with a SmartDoll, I had people stopping to say she was so cute and wanted to all about them. Hasn't cured me, but it was nice to get a good reaction. I bet those guys told their significant others all about those neat dolls. Great job!

Every time we go out in public for doll photos someone almost always comes up to show interest. Usually men. I don't mind that so much, but am still not comfortable when it happens at home.

These are amazing photos! I love that your workers were the supervisors.

I sometimes am self conscious when I take photos in public. If asked, I usually just say that I am a member of a doll club (which is true).

I think if you say you are a photographer who specializes in dolls scenes that will put aside any questions you might be asked.

You can say that your dolls are like action figures (which of course they are not) and that might also deter questions. Men understand action figures.

However you do it, thanks for telling these stories!!!!

Thanks. I just wish I wasn't so shy about taking photos in public.
