Harness & Saddles

I've been working on fixing some of my horse props.  Back when I shot the 'Popcorn Tree' sequence for my Christmas Story, I quickly made a harness for a horse to pull the sleigh.  But it was only in the middle and front, and tended to bunch up in front if I didn't pay attention....which I didn't.

It became clear that the harness needed a back section to help hold everything nicely in place. So I added that yesterday.  Much better!!

Then there were the saddle stirrups, which were not in the right place for my FID guys. They were way too far back, and even though I'd tried making new stirrups a few years ago, they were still not in the right place....
Picture
So I cut off the plastic stirrups, and made new ones out of leather. I stitched them on through holes drilled in the saddles.....

I do have several more horses that will need the stirrup adjustment, as well as new bridles, since most of the them came with bright pink accessories, which is totally not suitable.

I like the saddle cloths (is that the term?) which I hadn't notices before.

I like your new phrase "stirrup adjustment."

Those saddle blankets were made for Rex and Bianca's trip toNewfoundland two years ago. I also have some nice more Fantasy ones. It's just that you hardly ever see them, since they get covered when a doll is sitting on the saddle.

The additions to the harness look great, as do the stirrup adjustments! The transformations you've done to the original saddles are remarkable. They look so realistic you would never know they were plastic.

The saddle blankets are very attractive. It's too bad that they are covered up most of the time, but they sure look elegant when the riders dismount.

Thanks, but these saddles started out rather nice to begin with. I wish the toy company used these molds for all their saddles. Most of my horses came with rather flimsy nondescript 'saddles', in bright pink. I'm going to try transform the only light brown one.
