This morning when the girls came over, we tried making some St. Patrick's Day finery. I had thought they'd be able to handle some minimal sewing, and one could, while another was terrified of the needle and pouted until it was done for her. Because that didn't go very well, I sewed the elastic on their hats myself, although the girls did manage to gather the tulle for the hat decorations.
I had thought 7 to 9 year-olds could tie a simple knot, so had pre-cut strips of tulle which they were supposed to tie onto an elastic waistband. But since kids no longer have to tie their shoes - or anything else - only one girl could tie a knot at first, although the other two did pick it up eventually. It would seem that developing fine motor skills in kids seems to have gone the way of the dodo. However, all three girls were quite happy with the results. So we took a few pictures.
