Glittery Sequins & Mail Strike

11/23/2018

I'm continuing to work on this year's special Holiday dresses for the Kaye Wiggs girls.  I'm working on the last two sets, one blue lace with blue sequins and the second is black lace with the same blue sequins.....photographed here with the black and silver version  I finished last week....

The goal was to finish them this week so that they'd be available nicely in time for the upcoming Holiday season.  But then Canada Post had to throw a wrench in my plans. They've been on a rotating strike for a month now, with no end in sight.

DreamHigh Studio was shipping out Phairby, Fairy Godmother this past week, but not to Canada, since it's not accepting any parcels from the USA or any International destination. They are actually sending parcels back to the senders.  Iplehouse has also announced it can't ship anything to Canada at the moment due to the strike. I had an order for doll shoes and glasses that was cancelled with a full refund this week, because they can't ship to Canada either.

Outgoing mail is sporadic and not reliable. Some things are getting through, while others are stuck in limbo. There's people on a local doll group who have had impatient customers open Paypal disputes to get their money back, because the stuff they bought has not arrived yet - even though it's been explained to them about the strike, and that they will get their parcel eventually.

The government is talking about legislating an end to the strike, but the Union has already said they are prepared to fight the ruling in court. So, who knows how long this mess will go on.

So, the one year I was actually trying to be proactive, I'm going to be stuck with everything until whenever the strike is over. I almost felt like quitting earlier this week, but decided to finish all the dresses anyways. One can always use a special party dress, and not just at Christmas.

In the meantime I'm pushing onward, hoping to get done with them as soon as possible, so I can take pictures and move on. Christmas photos are calling.....

Martha, the dresses are beautiful!!!! I wish my Little Darlings could wear them but I don't think they are that size. Are you making anything in the BID size?
The mail strike is a bummer! Why did it have to happen just before the holiday?
Yes, please do keep sewing. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Sorry, nothing BID size right now. These scarves were only good for a bigger doll, since the sequins are way too big a scale for the smaller dolls.

I don't sew much for sale these days, but had decided to dedicate November to using up some of my extensive fabric stash. First I was going to make a bunch of EID size evening gowns, since they take up the most fabric, but in the end I went with the Kaye Wiggs size, since they seem to sell way better. Not that it's going to make any difference this time around, with the strike and all.

As soon as I'm done, it's back to making some things for my own dolls again, and taking Holiday photos.

The government forced them back to work, but they are not happy about it, and want to fight it in court.

Well, that sucks. Hope they finally get their knickers out of a twist and start mail up again. Too bad you can't stand at the border and say, "Here, just toss it to me."

I hear the USPS isn't that great either. Not that I buy much from the US. The dolls I am waiting for are from Indonesia, Russia, and Korea, so there's a mighty wide ocean to toss things over. LOL

Anyways, the government passed legislation to force them back to work.

The USPS has ups and downs (though UPS and FedEx are worse). I just got a box that looked like one end had been stepped on. And the carrier decided rather than leaving me a slip so I could pick it up at the PO (which I do because of the porch pirates who will just walk off with your packages), they would sign for it and pushed it in behind the glider seat on the porch. No, I was not happy. Fortunately, the contents were spared.

I'm not a big fan of couriers either - am still working on the insurance claim on the last delivery (which was a disaster).

I find when the Postal system is working as it should, then it's the best way to go.
