Most of the homes in Louisbourg did not have ovens, so Bianca had to go to the bakery every few days for some fresh bread....

Fireplaces came into vogue in upper middle class households in the 1600s, but before then they were only used in large castles or estates. So most people used a communal oven for bread making, and made their daily stews at home, either in the fireplace or, in earlier and/or poorer homes, over a central fire in the hall.

It was interesting that the King's Bakery was right by the forge. I wonder if that's on purpose?
