Forest Dwellers

3/3/2021

I have ten little Forest Dwellers, by Whispering Grass.  The first little mice arrived back in 2013.  When I first saw them I had imagined dressing them in clothes like the illustrations by Beatrix Potter. But it never happened.  I did make some tiny fairy tutus for the mice so they could be Sugarplum Fairies one Christmas and dance the Nutcracker with Mr. Ropuha....
Picture
In 2015 Smuzhka Raccoon joined them, along with a fourth little mouse....
Picture
The following year, Tiana arrived, and she came with a 'boy's outfit by the artist, so I made a dress so both toads would have something to wear....
Picture
The following year they were married, and I made a bridal gown and three tiny tuxedos....
Picture
In 2018 Ginger Raccoon arrived, along with Rhett and Kitty Khitrula Fox....

In 2019 I made Ginger a fancy pink gown...

But other than the two everyday outfits the Toads wear, everyone else remained naked....

Now, after all this time, the costumes I'd originally imagined have never materialized. So, with my eyesight deteriorating I figured it was high time to finally address all those tiny costumes before I would no longer be able to. So I've decided that will be my project for this March.  To make all ten little Forest Dwellers an outfit inspired by Beatrix Potter, and other illustrated animals stories....

With ten characters to dress, and there being 31 days in March, that means 3 days per outfit. That's a LOT of tiny clothes in not a lot of time.  The challenge will be to see if I can actually stick to it and make everyone something.

That’s a very cute idea but I hope it’s not so stressful like it seems. Best luck and best wishes for your eyes too🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Thanks. I'm hoping it won't be too stressful. It will be nice to see everyone dressed though.

That sounds decidedly challenging. Just thinking about the complexity of patterns for the mice in The Tailer of Gloucester, and Jeremy Fisher or the toad in Mrs Tittlemouse has me gasping - perhaps Two Bad Mice may need to come in to play towards the end of the month!

Thankfully the artist has posted free patterns for all her Forest Dwellers, so I have a place to start. The mice will be the most challenging, since they are just 10 cm tall.

I am pulling for you. I know there will be a celebration in the forest at the end and I can't wait for that.

They are all getting dressed up for a long awaited birthday party for Willie and Phairby this summer.

I love seeing all of them together and how these have progressed through the years. I am still on the hunt for my own tan Manuna and the original release of toads (did not care for the recent bright-colour releases on Etsy) to join my wee Lady Pearl and Lord Grey of Cheddarworth. You always inspire me!

I didn't care for the bright blue and green Toads either. What drew me to the original ones was their soft 'watercolour' tones, reminiscent of Beatrix Potter illustrations, and those new bright colours just don't fit in. They looked a bit menacing.

She did say she was going to release a darker grey Manuna this year, so I'll keep an eye out.
