Figuring out Lawrence

10/2/2019

It's coming up three years since I ordered FID Lawrence, and he's still proving elusive.  He got a new faceup, and then some minor enhancements, and I think this is as good as he's going to get.  He was one of the very first FID guys released when the Muscle body was the only option. I bought him a tuxedo right up front, knowing I'd never want to make one. So he at least has that to wear....

He was originally intended to be a 'couple' with Miho, and since she was out for a fairy photo shoot, the other day, I thought I'd try the two of them together again...

Lawrence was clearly sculpted after Johnathan Reese Myers, who starred as Henry VIII in the Tudors TV series. I totally dislike the actor, but love the Tudor and Elizabethan period costume-wise. So was considering that as a possibility. Not anything Henry wore, but more the kind of things the supporting actors wore. And definitely no baggy short pants and tights!

I don't have a lot of clothes that fit an FID, but wanted to try some things on him. There's Owen's musketeer outfit, which fits Rex, but he's considerably slimmer. So I tried it on Lawrence anyways, just to see how he'd look. It didn't fit very well, so I added Rex's tartan cloak....

Although he wasn't a 'tuxedo' kind of guy, and needed the shirt open, this JID shirt is too low around the neck. He definitely needs a higher collar.  So I thought I'd try Rex's outfit on him....

I really liked him in Rex's outfit.  But then any guy would look good in that.  I was actually surprised that it fit as well as it did, since Rex has the Model body, which is a lot slimmer, and not as wide across the shoulders. The vest actually fits Lawrence better.

So now I need to decide what to do with him.  I even went to Michaels today to pick up some black leather for a Fantasy Warrior outfit for him. Something inspired by Lord of the Rings, like Boromir.  But now I'm thinking  I should expand on the 'Outlander' period first.  Something fancy from the French court, and not from the TV series. Those costumes weren't realistic enough to the period.  Something new for Rex and Bianca, and maybe even Monica.

But right now I shouldn't be sewing.  I did something to my right wrist back in July, and have been doing too much handwork the last while, and it's gotten a lot worse, so I am trying to give it a rest. Hopefully it will clear up on its own, because I know my doctor will just scold me for "doing too much crafts". She doesn't get it that I can't just stop.  But pain is no fun either.

He is a handsome guy. His face-up and wig give him a rugged look that really suits the period costumes. I agree with you that he's not really a tuxedo kind of guy. He'd probably look great in jeans and a fisherman knit sweater or a hunting jacket.

It's funny, since that's exactly what Charie said when I picked him up. But I don't do 'contemporary' FIDs, beyond the tux. Yet.

I love the "yet"!

Well, I never intended for my JIDs to go contemporary either, and look how that turned out. There's Leona & Owen, Steve & Isis (contemporary version), and Benny. All with their respective families. Even my Asa, Queen of the Night, and Kassia, the Snow Queen, have been contemporary women.

Hi, Martha !
I think this guy is partly rough and partly elegant, he's a character who can behave as an aristocrat among the others but with a wild strength he releases when outdoor. I hope I wrote no nonsense with my English. Better health with your wrist.

Thanks! I think he could be anything, but I'm thinking it might be a good idea to keep all my Fashion size dolls in more or less the same period. But then, why restrict myself?

I think Lawrence looks great with the tartan cape!
Maybe he'd look good in more tartan, and how about a kilt? going for a "Braveheart" look rather than "Outlander" lol.

I've always wanted to make the Braveheart costume for one of my dolls. One of my art figures has a version of it. It's just a real pain in the hands with all the leather work and tiny studs. But it is on my wish list. Along with a hundred other things.

I agree with the other comments that Lawrence has a rugged charm about him - definitely more of an outdoors type of guy than a courtier.

And with the auburn wig and bearded face-up, I don't think at all of Johnathan Reese Myers when I see him. Looks like a totally different guy.

It's amazing what a faceup can do.

I just wish he had the Model body, but unfortunately it hadn't been introduced yet at the time the first FID guys came out. I'm going to have to be careful about what outfit I make for him in order to help minimize the width of his shoulders. He may even need longer hair.

What?! No baggy short pants and tights?! *shocked gasp* LOL. Seriously, though, he looks amazing in the period costumes, especially the one you made for Rex. I love the look of the FIDs, especially the guys, and they’re just so versatile: comfortable in anything you dress them in. Can’t wait to see what you come up with for him and his true love!

It's probably going to take a while, since I should be resting my hand. I have been looking for inspiration online. It's a toss up between something Lord of the Rings, something roughly Elizabethan, or make Rex and Bianca something new from their period and then he can wear Rex's outfit while he waits for something for himself.

I'm also toying with making him the Phantom Red Death costume, to continue with my Phantom series. The masks were made on Lawrence when he was blank, and if he's the Phantom in that costume, the mask covers his whole face, so then Rex can be Christine's true love. But that means making THREE new costumes. And I shouldn't even be sewing, so I'll see.

I'm getting a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe from the last couple of photos - Will, not Jack. That would be pretty cool :)

Pirates would be consistent with Rex and Bianca's time period. There's a whole range of possibilities in that period - rugged highlanders, American colonists, French aristocrats, the English simpler versions (as in the first seasons of Poldark), and pirates.
