Dragonworks

I'm starting off the new year trying to finish the dragon I started back in September. He's a stuffed fabric dragon from a pattern by Melinda Small Patterson. All the body parts are sewn and stuffed..

Next comes a bit of soft-sculpture, and some painting....
Picture
I plan on building up the face details with Apoxie Sculpt, so right now it just has
minimal soft-sculpturing, and beads sewn in for the basic eye shape. He still
needs his basic stuffed antlers and horns, and then I can start sculpting...
Picture
I'm not convinced that the button-jointed wings with claws are going to work for me.
Picture
What I want is a poseable dragon that looks much like the ones my sister Marianne
used to sculpt.  A dragon like this, but poseable, and one that isn't nearly so delicate,
so it's easier to transport around for photos.....
Picture
A dragon like if Marianne's and Smallworks' dragons had a baby, with the best attributes of both; not too heavy, soft stuffed fabric, that's not going to break easily, but with the details of a sculpted dragon. And fully poseable. Not asking much, am I?

So I'm continuing with the body and legs, and once those are together, I will take a serious look at the Smallworks arm/wing design to see if it will fit my needs. If not, which I suspect will be the case, then it's starting over with those and designing separate wired arms and wired wings, and figuring out how to best attach those.

I can't wait to see the final result, it looks fabulous to me so far. You never cease to amaze me ! You even make me want to do one, even if I don't need a dragon at all for the moment, LOL !

I'm looking forward to when he's done too! But I think this may just be the first, and that I'm going to have to make another bigger one. I did a bit of Apoxie sculpting on his head, and he's looking more and more like I envisioned him - except now he has such a small body.

I have complete confidence that you will get a dragon that will best for you.
Good luck and have fun figuring out how to do it.

What about using an internal armature like this, similar to what Worms and Bones use in their creatures?

It's too late for that now. I do have wire in the body right up into the head, and in the legs.

I can't wait either, but I keep re-thinking what I'm doing, so it's taking way longer than I expected.

He will be beautiful. The apoxie sculpting on his head looks promising. But what I wonder about is: How do you manage to embroider the beads to the stuffed body without making holes? I really would appeciate a tutorial for that!

Beading needles are almost as fine as hair, so don't leave holes.
