Doll Photography in Killarney

There's just a few Behind the Scenes shots to share from our recent trip to Killarney.

The biggest adventure was taking dolls along in the canoe out Chikanishing Creek to the shores of Georgian Bay. Two of my doll boxes will fit into my one cloth bag, and two dolls would fit into each box, so four of the girls got to come along. Then the cloth bag was put into a big garbage bag to keep everything dry.  I also took along Winston and Saphira in pretty much the same way, but that story is for another time.

With my spinal arthritis I can's paddle, or even sit in a canoe for very long, but I still like to take a look out along the coast, so I make the effort. We always get out at the mouth of the creek for a look around.

The view from high up on the rocks is spectacular, and I wanted to take some photos of my girls up there. However it being a clear sunny day, and resin not much loving the sun, I needed some shade for when I was setting up the dolls....

He'd step away when I took the photos....

I also asked him to hold the dolls individually so I could take some close ups. But he was too captivated by the scenery to really pay much attention....

Back at the campground I had wanted to take some photos of the girl's campsite. Fortunately all the other campers along the water had left by Sunday afternoon, so we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Which is just how I prefer it, with no one watching.  I set up the girl's campsite...

Unfortunately I suffer from considerable back pain and it had become increasingly more difficult to get down on the ground (and up again), so I was only able to photograph the one set-up. There would be no getting up to change poses, get down again and shoot some more.  Even so, I totally over-did it and am still paying for it weeks later. So I guess I shouldn't be doing that anymore. It's very disheartening since some of my best photos over the years were taken while laying down on the ground.

I always love your behind the scenes photos and Killarney is no exception. Besides showing how you create such lifelike pictures with the dolls, they show just how small the dolls really are. Thank you so much for creating beautiful make-believe stories in spite of the pain the effort causes you.

Thanks. Yes, the dolls are quite small, and it's sometimes quite a challenge to make them fit into a scene. The only way to do it is to take photos at their eye level, which means raising them up to where a child their age's eyes would be, or getting down to the doll's eye level. And if these KW girls weren't challenging enough, the other dolls I brought along (my House Elves) weren't even half their height.

Yeaaa, behind the scenes! I love seeing Jan as a "sun shield" (laugh). I can see why he might have been distracted. The view is amazing.

I am so sorry to hear of your discomfort. Your efforts are appreciated. We love seeing whatever photos you want to share, many or a few. They are all lovely.

Thanks. It is gorgeous up there, which is why I still make the effort to go out in the canoe with him. It's hard to get into and even harder to get out, and I'm basically 'ballast with a camera' but at least I get to still see it.
