Chronicling the Past

I've been spending a lot of time working on books recently, and thought I'd share a very special one. As many of you know, I spent fifteen years making hundreds of OOAK art dolls with my sister Marianne. We worked together from the late eighties, through the nineties, up until around 2005.  She did all the sculpting, and I costumed and finished them.

We always went to great efforts to take nice photos of every single one, since it would be all that we'd have left after they sold. So we both had stacks of albums full of photos. Then last year she decided to put them all into one printed book.  Since 99% of the dolls were made in the days before digital photography, she spent the entire year scanning in all the negatives, then spent months laying out the book.

She surprised me with a copy on my birthday a few months ago...

It's a magnificent 245 page collection documenting every one of the hundreds of sculpted dolls we ever made.  A true testament to Marianne's sculpting skills, and my costuming ability. So, I thought I'd take some photos to show a selection of some of our work...from our earlier figures...

The photos aren't necessarily all my favourites, as I wanted to show a variety of our styles. I'm sure some of the costumes will seem familiar, as I've made copies of some of them for my ball-jointed dolls. In fact I wouldn't mind BJD versions of many of them. like those knights, and the ones from the Elizabethan and Rococo periods.  Who knows!  Maybe I still will some day.

(*Note - This book will not be offered up for pre-order, because at 246 pages the cost would be prohibitive. Even at a publisher's half price sale it would still be almost four times what people who have purchased my previous books are used to paying)

Absolutely stunning. Perhaps you would consider doing a digital book of these? I just bought Ankie Danaan's ebook and it's terrific. You both are wonderfully creative. I really appreciate seeing the work that went into all of these creations.

Thank you. I saw she was selling digital e-books, but the problem with those is that people can share them for free with as many others as they want, with just the push of a single button. And that sort of defeats the purpose.

Have you ever considered doing digital through a website like Amazon or Apple? I don’t believe you could share those so easily, especially Amazon. That might be safer for you to not have it shared around.

Oh my goodness, this book is amazing!!! It's definitely a book to treasure. You and your sister are such wonderfully talented artists.

I recognize the Butterfly Monarch outfit.

And you sculpted Mary Cassatt! There is a tearoom that is named in her honor in a hotel in Philadelphia. I have been there several times. Harp music is played while one enjoys Afternoon Tea.

The book is a treasure and so is your sister! I agree with Jay, sisters are the best. ❤️
The variety of dolls and costumes you two have created over the years is truly amazing!
It's also lovely to see how you've recreated many of these costumes for your BJDs.

I remember seeing many years ago one of the pieces that you and your sister made as part of an exhibit on Canadian dolls at the Museum of Civilization. I must have stared at it for 15 minutes. Truly your work and your sister’s is amazing. The most prized piece in my collection is Shipwrecked.

Thank you! Yes, that was Leonardo da Vinci. He was on loan to the the museum for three years.

Shipwrecked was one of the very last figures we made. I still remember going out to collect stones so I'd have something to copy when I painted the wooden 'rocks' she was standing on.
