Behind the Scenes

Okay, before my group continues on their way north, I'm going to have to fess up to the 'secret' behind all the snow photos. Are they really in the snow?  Yes, and no.  They are standing in real snow, but the background was layered in from older scenery photos I've taken.

I've been waiting for some decent snow for weeks, and it just wasn't happening, so I got the idea to take my dolls and horses over to the Rec Centre, where there's piles of 'snow' , from the zamboni that regularly cleans the ice rink there.

It was cold and snowing lightly, when I set up the dolls and horses. Then Jan held up a big white sheet to serve as temporary background....

I changed the poses and direction they were heading a few times, and moved around the pile to take photos from different directions.  Then when I got home, I looked through my old photo albums for suitable background pictures, and found some from a trip West, in Spring 2012.

I chose a photo of Bow Lake, in Banff, as the background to this photo....

And I chose this photo of Tangle Falls in a Blizzard, as the background for this photo....

It's not an easy process, especially since I have very limited knowledge of Photoshop, but I was very happy with the results.

Okay, so now that you know how it was done, maybe we can get on with the story......

Oh Martha, I just love this!!! Thanks so much for showing us your magic. You are so clever. If snow does not come to you, you go and find it! Truly awesome.

If you did not tell, I would never guessed the background nature was added in photoshop. It's just amazing!

You've made their journey look like a long trek through a vast wilderness!

Well these are just amazing! And what's this about having limited Photoshop skills??!!! I'd say you've got some pretty mad skills! Thank you for taking us behind the scenes. I wonder if we have a zamboni "snow site" by our skating rink? Sigh...even if we did, no way could I talk DH into holding up the backdrop!
