Bees

Today is World Bee Day, when we acknowledge the important role of bees for the ecosystem. We have been celebrating this day since 2018, thanks to the efforts of the Government of Slovenia, that led the UN General Assembly to declare May 20 as World Bee Day. They chose this day as it was the birthday of Anton Janša, the pioneer of modern apiculture.

How to celebrate Bee Day....

planting a diverse set of native plants, which flower at different times of the year;
avoiding pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in our gardens;
protecting wild bee colonies when possible;
making a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside;
Dress up like bees in costume and participate in bee-related activities.

Wonderful!!! Holly and her teddy are adorable messengers of some really interesting information.
I love the bee hive and all the friendly bees. Did you make them? (I know this is a silly rhetorical question! 😄)

Thanks! I had originally shot another set of photos for Bee Day, but they weren't that great, so I transplanted several bunches of forget-me-nots into a photogenic spot in our upper garden to try again.

I had four bees already (two like the one sitting on her hand, and two like the one on top of the beehive), but I wanted more, so we went looking for some at Michaels. They had some (not nearly as nice) in black or yellow, and with awful, tiny wire-loop wings. So I bought two packages of the yellow ones, repainted them, gave them better wings, and glued them onto thin wires.

I also made the beehive out of some jute rope from Dollarama, and added some polymer clay 'honey' to the brim of a small ceramic pot.

What cutie bees (and human, well doll, and bear)!

I poured honey on my cornbread this morning not realizing it was a celebratory action. I love honey! Thank you bees.
