went out for one last look at the beach beyond our campsite....
After everyone was changed back into their 'normal' clothes, Milo and Holly went out for one last look at the beach beyond our campsite.... We were planning on taking the ferry back across the Strait to Newfoundland today, but on the way, we wanted to stop and check out all the places we'd missed in the fog yesterday. The town of West St. Modeste had an iceberg out in the bay, so Lonnie and Owen went out to take a look.... Heading back to the RV...
We spent the night along the beach at Pinware River Provincial Park. Next morning it was still damp and cloudy. The wind had picked up, so at least it wasn't foggy. Thinking that today there would be better photo opportunities for my contemporary gang, I decided to change everyone back into their regular clothes. But first a few quick pictures of Lonnie and Coco at the beach... By this point I really wasn't feeling very well, so creativity and motivation for taking doll photos
was really starting to take a blow, so their Fantasy costumes did not come out again. Next morning we took the ferry to Labrador. The ferry sails to Blanc Sablon, which is just on the Quebec side of the border with Labrador. Only about 120 kilometres of road on the mainland there is paved - about 50 kilometres into Quebec, and just over 60 kilometres into Labrador. The paved road ends in Red Bay, then a gravel road continues hundreds of kilometres further north to Goose Bay and Labrador City. When we arrived on the mainland, it was very foggy. We started to drive into Quebec, but the fog was so thick that we couldn't see anything. So we turned around and headed into Labrador instead. The fog was lighter, and the sun was fighting to get through in each small town. We soon ended up in Red Bay, at the end of the paved road. Red Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, former site of several Basque whaling stations dating from the 16th century. Now it's a quiet fishing village. There were some iceberg remnants grounded out in the bay.... There was a grouping of small Inukshuks outside one of the Visitor Centres, which I
thought would make a great setting for some doll photos. So, out they came... Yesterday Iplehouse released the first three dolls in their brand new Fashion line. They are slightly taller than the JIDs, but with the more realistic proportions of their larger dolls. The new Fashion line opens up all kinds of opportunities - a beautiful realistic proportioned doll without the inconvenient size and weight of the larger sculpts, and at a fraction of the price.
Two of the girls - Raffine and Stella - are smaller versions of existing larger sculpts, but Miho is new. Apparently there will be male dolls coming as well, so that opens up even more possibilities. I'd like a Fashion Rex, please! I don't know if they will fit with all my smaller dolls. I suspect they'd need to be a 'stand alone' group or pair. However, in a Fantasy outfit, they could join my existing group. In Lord of the Rings, the characters come in all different scales and proportions, so they would work in such a group. I guess I'll find out soon enough. I fell in love with Miho, and ordered her.... At Fishing Point, across the small parking lot at the lighthouse, there was also a low Viking-style building of rough stone with a sod roof. I thought it would be perfect as my Fantasy family's 'home'. Sure it had glass windows, but who cares? The dolls are Fantasy characters, so glass was okay. So, off came everyone's cloaks, and most of their weapons, after all they didn't need to be quite so armed at home, and cloaks would only get in the way as they did their chores... It was very windy.
After taking photos in Goose Cove, we headed back to Fishing Point in St. Anthony. It was a warm Sunday morning, and the place was crowded. Apparently the icebergs had been putting on quite the show. Both huge bergs off the point had just split in half, and the ocean was filled with pieces of ice drifting towards the western shore. Instead of two large icebergs, now there were four.... Only the big 'airplane wing' part of the one that was stranded here yesterday was left. The other half had drifted to the west. I so wish we'd been there to see the breakup! Anyway, one of the goals of being here, was to take some more doll photos. But it was over 25 Celsius, which for NFLD standard was downright 'tropical'. And it was a clear blue sky, and I'd be shooting into the sun again. So I only took a couple of pictures.... Anyway, it was very warm, and there were lots of people, and I wash't feeling very well,
and I was getting fed up with the harsh shadows of shooting into the sun, so we left..... One of the doll forums is hosting a themed photo competition, and I thought I'd enter. But I needed to use dolls exclusive to that forum, which meant two of my Iplehouse beauties had to give up their gowns. They still had their masks to hide behind, in order to maintain some modesty, but Kassia's mask won't hide much, so she's moved in close to Asa, whose mask is big enough for the both of them.... This is what happens when each doll only has the clothes they are wearing, and there's nothing spare to switch into. Maybe I should consider making some dressing gowns, for just such emergencies. I had a lot of fun taking photos for the competition, and I couldn't have done it without lots of help from Jan, hauling stuff out into the backyard to help me set up. But I won't be showing any of the photos until after the competition is over. So, stay tuned, in about a week from now.....
