I've been sewing all afternoon, and now I'm exhausted. I've made some good progress on the girls' outfits. They still need their hooded cloaks, and their leather bags. I think I'll make them over-the-shoulder bags like the one Lonnie has borrowed from Maya. The blues look amazing on Hope, and really set off her blue eyes. I'm not sure what wig Lonnie will wear to go with her outfit when it's done. Right now I'm just experimenting.
I had hoped to be able to go down to the lake and shoot my last UFO pictures, but I need a totally cloudless sky at around 5 pm in the afternoon, for lighting and sky conditions consistent with the first set of photos - it was supposed to be clear, but it isn't. Maybe tomorrow. Everyone's clothes are coming along nicely, although nothing much is actually finished yet, other than stockings, underwear and shawls. I ran out of the embroidery floss colour I was using on one of the bodices, and I don't have the right colour thread to top-stitch the ribbon on one of the skirts, so that means a trip to the store. I can't wait to see these outfits done.
There's nothing like having some big crabapple trees in the backyard, to attract migrating birds in spring! Last week I spotted a whole flock of cedar waxwings feasting on the shriveled red fruit. This morning some of them were back, and I caught one on camera. The robins love the crabapples too, and even though I've spotted my first pair hopping about in the snow, I've not seen any in the tree. The yearlong resident cardinals like the crabapples too. I LOVE my tele-photo lens!! Well, back to sewing.........until the next distraction.
Today is "Flower Day", so the girls have decided to surprise their newest special friend with a big bouquet. Yesterday I spent the whole day cutting out most of the parts for the four new costumes - everything except for their cloaks. I can't believe how long cutting out takes! First thing to do today is Fray Check some of the cut edges - some of the fabrics are so soft and thin, they need the reinforcement or my machine will just eat them up. I'm most curious to see how Lonnie will look in her new outfit. It's a larger, different colour version of Nami's "Jennet" outfit, and I'm making it so she can come along on our summer road trip to Newfoundland.
In addition to being the first day of Spring, and "Alien Abduction Day", today is also "Quilt Day" and "Proposal Day". There was no way I could put them all into one photo - or would want to. So, here we have Adrian, who finds Kassia working on her unicorn quilt, and he finally musters up the courage to present her with a beautiful diamond ring, and propose. Now to get back to some serious sewing! Actually, I need to cut out the rest of everyone's clothes first - slip, dresses, over-skirts, shirts and vests - and that has to be done at the kitchen table where there's more room. Then get as much machine-sewing done as possible. Evenings are better for hand-sewing and finishing.
Today is officially the first day of Spring - although one would never know it here - but it's also "Festival of Extraterrestrial Abductions Day". My girls decided not to take any chances....They went down to the lake by the nuclear plant - where UFOs are known to hang out - but they went prepared. I just took a few photos, and it was enough for a very short little photo story, but I still need to go back and shoot the finale - then I'll post it in Favourite Photos.
I've started my next four outfits. They will be two sets of my "peasant/fantasy/Hobbit" style outfits - one set for my Narin and KID Lonnie, and the other set for Kaye Wiggs MSD boy and girl. I spent all day yesterday going through boxes of fabrics, and finally settled on a turquoise-blue combination for the girls, and a blue-purple and black combination for the boys. I made some turquoise-green tights for the girls, and some purple-striped socks for the guys. But then when going to check-out at Walmart last night, I spotted some men's T-shirts on sale - and they were in all kinds of different muted stripes. So, I picked an extra-large (more fabric) in a nice dull blue stripe and another in a tawny brown. The blue stripe was a perfect match to the shirt fabric I'd chosen for the boy's outfits, so today I had to remake the guy's socks. I always work from the "inside out", so next step is to make pants for the boys, and pantaloons and slips for the girls. Then they can have their shoes back on.
Spent yesterday afternoon and evening hunting for some props for some upcoming Special days photos. My son showed me some of his old toys, but the parts were too small, so we ended up digging through his massive Lego collection, and I built what I needed - although I did borrow one of his Mr. Potato Heads for another separate photo it inspired. Then I wanted to borrow something from my sister, but she couldn't find it, so we ended up at Dollarama a few minutes before closing to stock up on pie plates and some shiny Mardi-Gras necklaces. What am I making? It's a secret - or at least I'm not saying - until the first photo goes up later this week. I spent this morning making several props, then another white T-shirt and a skirt, to go with my son's Mr. Potato Head, then restyled one of my Byuri's wigs to suggest as closely as possible a very famous hairstyle. Now we just need to go to the lake and take pictures. It's a bright sunny day, so I'll need to wait until later this evening for softer light. Hopefully the photos will work. I was taking some photos in the kitchen this afternoon, and got some lovely portraits of Erzulie and Narae as the bright light bounced off the table to light up their faces.... Earlier this week, I cut Erzulie's wig - it was just too long in my opinion. It's much better now. Narae has such a lovely smile. She reminds me so much of Kate Middleton.
Well, Friday is "clean up day" in preparation for the grandchildren to come over tomorrow morning. I'm hoping this evening to still be able to sew a brown mohair wig for Soa, and maybe take a group photo of all my BIDs and KIDs. Then next week I have to seriously get going on doll clothes again - two sets of all-purpose, ageless fantasy, "Hobbit-style" outfits - but first I need to choose the fabrics. Well, I certainly didn't get very far on my new boy's outfit this week! But at least both Narin and Maya have underwear now. It's interesting just how different their bodies are; Maya, the scrawny, pale little guy, vs. Narin with his nice buff tan. So I had them model for a picture.....
