Another Bear Encounter

Most northern parks hand out rules for camping in 'Bear Country', and number one rule is to never leave any food out. Keep all your food locked in a hard side camper or your car.

Knowing we would be in 'Bear Country', I had brought along my own little black bear just in case some photo opportunities would present themselves. And sure enough, one day, the kids left their cooler and picnic basket out. Which is never a good idea with bears around

"Who left all our food out???"

"He's eating EVERYTHING!!!

Oh, does this story bring back memories of a camping trip to Killarney many years ago! When I wanted to put the cooler in the trunk of the car for the night, my husband (not a seasoned camper) insisted it would be perfectly safe on the picnic table if he put a large bucket of water on top of it. We awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of the bucket hitting the ground and a black bear happily devouring all our food. A bucket of water is no deterrent to a hungry bear in search of a midnight snack!

It seems kind of funny now, but I bet it wasn't at the time. Bears are very clever, and expert at getting to food.

I'm so glad my photos are bringing back camping memories - happy, or otherwise. Between the two camping trips, I was trying to document as many camping experiences as I could come up with - at least ones I could do with my dolls.

I hope there was some Alka Seltzer in that picnic basket, because that poor little bear is going to need some!
