...and We're Back!!

Just got home this afternoon!

It was some trip!  One of our main goals was to see icebergs, and it was supposed to be a banner year for them this year. Key word being 'was'.  They came early this year - in May - so we pretty much missed them.

It was also very cold and wet. Lots of storms, with lots of rain. There were still pockets of snow everywhere...
Picture
And when it wasn't raining, there was the fog....
Picture
Thankfully I prefer the cooler weather, and I love the rugged barren landscape.  Just Jan and I, on the open road, mostly to ourselves, with the rocks, the trees, the ocean, the snow, the rain, the fog, and some occasional sunshine. No radio, no TV, no computer, no cellphones....just our cameras, some old iPads with sketchy reception once in awhile if we were someplace that actually had wifi, and an RV full of dolls and props.

Rex and Bianca first came out of the cupboard in Quebec, at our favourite riverside park in St. Roche des Aulnais
Picture
Then they booked passage on a schooner in Lunnenburg Nova Scotia. ....
Picture
We arrived in Newfoundland the evening before a big four-day storm, so quickly managed a few sunset shots at Rose Blanche....
Picture
The kids had a grand old time whenever we stopped somewhere and let them out of the closet....
Picture
While Rex and Bianca travelled the coast on horseback....
Picture
One especially memorable part of the trip was the days we spent at St. Vincent, and watched the whales frolic just offshore. I've never seen anything like it...and just meters off shore....
Picture
We just sat on the beach and watched all day....
Picture
The kids loved Labrador....
Picture
...and one town there still had an iceberg in the bay.
A local took us out in his boat for a closer look....
Picture
Back in Nova Scotia, we spent an entire day in the Fortress of Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island, where Rex and Bianca fit right in...
Picture
Then last night before our final dash for home, we stopped in Quebec again....
Picture
All in all, I have some 2,000 photos to go through now, so it's going to take a while. Plus we have to get used to this ridiculous heat here at home, and take back control of our gardens.
So lots to do....

And lastly, one of my favourite photos...a foggy morning at Cape Bonavista.....
Picture
Lots more to come, so stay tuned.....

Dear Martha, yeaaaaa, you are back!!!

I am so glad you had a great time.

I love the photos you posted. I love the historic story line and the contemporary story line.

I missed your stories and I am delighted that you have much to tell. I can't wait!

I'm glad to be home, although I hate this heat.

I didn't bother with a 'trip story' with the kids this time, since I've done that twice before, and didn't want to just repeat it with different dolls.

There is a story with Rex and Bianca buried somewhere amongst all the photos I took, but I think I'll weave that together later. Just post their photos in the order I took them for now.

Welcome home!!! It's wonderful to have you back, although I'm very glad you went away.... there will be so many beautiful photos of your journey to enjoy.

Today's samples are a lovely foretaste of what's to come. I'm very happy you and Jan had a good trip even if the weather didn't always cooperate.

Thanks! There's lots of doll photos - and scenery too. As always, I wish I had taken more, but we had some really nasty weather, and there's a limit to how wet the ground is before I refuse to get down on it.

The best weather happened on the four days coming home - of course. Anyways, now I have my work cut out for me, and that takes some getting used to as well. I'm still getting over the pain everywhere, after spending the whole day at Fortress Louisbourg last Wednesday. It's back to watering my plants every morning, and I have to really pace myself with all the plant work. I've cleaned off one windowsill in the kitchen so far, and filled one pail with garden plant debris. So many flowers bloomed while we were away, and now they all need cutting back.

Fortunately working on photos isn't very strenuous, so I'll do that between breaks.

I have been checking every day, torn between hoping you were having a long and wonderful trip and wanting to see the photos! Well worth the wait - the new costumes look so natural, and are perfect for the chilly weather.

I'm there right with you on that. My camera only has a really small screen, so I can't really see what I took until I get back home and download the photos. I knew there were some great ones in there, as best as I could tell, but I can't be sure until I'm home.

I made those costumes especially for the trip, knowing the scenery in Newfoundland would make the perfect setting for Rex and Bianca as 18th century travellers.

Great photos! Those whales look way too close for comfort--I hope you were using a telephoto lens. I love the atmospheric feel of pictures taken in the fog. The period costumes--and horses--add an additional layer to the storytelling. I can't wait to see the stories that develop. Welcome back!

I was using a telephoto much of the time, but the whales were really close. It's because the ocean floor drops so deep right off shore right there. Apparently they get even closer when the capelin come in.

Fog has it's own magic. The only thing I really didn't want to take photos in, was pouring rain. Which we also had plenty of.

Great shots! I really love your Rex and Bianca. They look so well together. Aren't whales just magnificent? I used to see them all the time when we lived in Juneau. Not so much since we moved, but I still see the occasional Beluga when we go up to Anchorage.

I love those two together.

I've seen whales before, but usually just their backs as they come up for air. And the occasional tail when on a boat tour years ago. Nothing like this.

Welcome home Martha :). I am glad you enjoyed your trip, these "teaser" photos look absolutely fantastic, I am really looking forward to seeing all the pictures you will show us. I love to see these faraway places I will probably never visit myself, but thanks to you I can enjoy them too. So I am sending big "thank you" to you and Jan! :)

Thanks! Yes, we had a good time. And in addition to the scenery, it's always fun to find places that work for taking doll photos. It adds a whole extra dimension, esp when visiting someplace we've been to many times before. Makes me look at things a whole new way. And standing around helping me, gives Jan the extra time to really look around at stuff.
