A Wig for Dominic

I've spent the past two and a half months working on a story to explain why Baron ends up looking different. In one scene, Dominic enters the room...

And it hit me just how much I disliked his wig.  It was the best I had available when he first arrived, but I had always envisioned him with something else. As an older man, I envisioned him with long, combed back hair, sprinkled with grey. But that is the most difficult kind of wig to make, since the entire front hairline would show, and men have a very distinct hairline. I used to be able to do it on an art doll when the hair was glued directly onto the doll's head, but making a removable wig in that style is a totally different thing.

But since the new story would take place many months after he last appeared at Baron and Naomi's wedding, this was the perfect time to finally address his wig. So I chose a dark brown and grey mohair, and set about making the 'salt and pepper' fringes for his wig.

Then I spent two whole days gluing the mohair onto his wig cap, one tiny bit at a time.

Then I reshot the scenes in the story...

But I still wasn't happy with his wig. The gray was too 'chunky' in areas, and his hair was too 'pouffy' on top.  I considered starting all over from scratch, but before I did, I'd have nothing to lose if I played with this one a bit more.  So I took a different, warmer gray mohair, and glued wisps of it in place to even out the grey, then worked in a bit of hair gel to tame the top.

Much better!

The wig could still use a bit of trimming, but it was good enough for now.

You did a great job. This wig really suits him and looks so much mor “alive”. Wig making is a very tedious process. I don’t think people realize how long it takes unless they’ve tried it.

Thanks! Nice wigs for men are pretty much impossible to buy, but making them isn't on my list of top 100 favourite things to do. It's always a very stressful project. Which is why his wig was delayed for so long. In the end I just forced myself to do it, and I'm glad I did, since he looks so much better now.

I like this wig. He looks distinguished. He even looks a bit "biblical" or "mystical,' which I think might fit nicely in the story.

Thanks. I was going for an older, distinguished look. And he is a sorcerer.

The wig looks perfect on him, you did a wonderful job. I make wigs too, so I know what you mean, about how very time consuming and difficult a project it is. But so worth it in the end.

Thank you. Oh, it's definitely worth it, but I still don't really like making them.

It’s amazing how different his whole face looks with the new wig. It really does suit his character.

Looks wonderful! Love the blend of gray. Yes, I wish more commercial wig makers would concentrate on male wigs more. My Rex has 2 different wigs and I don't like either but they are the best I could do.

Thanks. The problem with making a proper men's wig, especially in a shorter style, is that men have a very distinct hairline, and all the commercial wigs are just based on a bowl-shaped cap, which just won't do for a guy. Which means the only option is a hard wig cap with the proper hairline, and each male sculpt will need a different shaped cap, so the wig fits close.

Wow, I liked him with his old wig, but I love him with the new one! He looks regal, it really works for him. You did amazing job, Martha. Even though you do not like making wigs for men, the result is as usual splendid.
I think, I will really have to muster up the courage and try to do some mohair wigs myself, because the difference in look is huge.

Thanks. I really like his new look. He's much more like always envisioned him, as an older, distinguished companion to Miho.

It's amazing, how much the hair changes a face. Dominik looks so much better now, very distinguished.

How will you explain the changing hair color? Maybe his hair turned gray, because he used too much magic for something like trying to hatch a little dragon or enchanting a gift for Miho?

Thanks. I totally agree.

Well, it's been many months since he last appeared in photos, and some men have been known to turn gray almost overnight. So I don't think I need to explain it.
